@rachelmillward.bsky.social speaks to Sky about Labour's lurch to the right on asylum policy - and why the Green Party is focused on real solutions to the cost of living instead.
Dear Shabana, I notice today that you referred to me in your speech on immigration at the IPPR think tank. You said: βA party leader should not be on the beaches of France encouraging people to make a perilous crossing on small boats.β I suppose I shouldnβt be surprised especially after the hateful Labour campaign in Gorton and Denton, but this is just the latest in a string of lies peddled by a discredited Government who intentionally fan the flames of racism and division. When I went to Calais, I was not there to encourage people to travel to the UK. I was there to see at first hand the suffering your Government and successive Governments have done in demonising migrants in a pathetic bid to pander to the base instincts of Reform and the flawed strategy of Morgan McSweeney. As you will know, if you even bothered to research my visit instead of taking Reform talking points, I was there to witness the brutality of families living in tents in freezing temperatures. I filled water tanks and picked up litter. What that visit did do is confirm my belief that if we are to smash the boat gangs and stop the boats, we need to offer safer and managed routes for migrants to come to this country. Showing compassion as a politician is not a crime. In fact, we need to see much more of it. It reminded me of a young MP who in October 2015 spent three days in Lesbos helping migrants fleeing war-torn Syria. She posted videos on X, talked about handing out water and croissants to refugees and food parcels. When she returned to the UK, she wrote a very moving piece in the New Statesman. She said βwe have to work with our European partners and create new, safe, and legal routes for refugees to get to Europe. We cannot abandon them to their fate, left as prey for smugglers whilst risking death on the seas.β She said βmaybe we can make ourselves feel better by saying no-one is making them get on the boats. And again, the Home Secretary is not entirely wrong when β¦
Dear Shabana,
Let's clear some things up around migration and remember we're talking about people's lives.

As oil and gas companies see rocketing revenues, and more people face job insecurity, now is the time for the government to end tax breaks for fossil fuel companies, and support oil and gas workers into green jobs instead.

The Rt Hon Pat McFadden MP Secretary of State for Work and Pensions By Email Dear Pat, As Green Party MPs and Peers, we are writing to you regarding the Universal Credit (Removal of Two Child Limit) Bill. Green Parliamentarians welcome the long-overdue decision to remove the cruel two child benefit cap, and we want to put on record our thanks to all of the campaigns and individuals with lived experience of the cap who have worked tirelessly to push the government to this point. This cap should have been scrapped on day one of this Parliament, and it is shameful that 330,000 children were kept in poverty unnecessarily while action was delayed.1 Ahead of the Autumn Budget, when talking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Chancellor Rachel Reeves said: βI donβt think that itβs right that a child is penalised because they are in a bigger family, through no fault of their own.β2 We wholeheartedly agree with this statement, which is why we are extremely concerned that the Government is refusing to consider scrapping a second harmful policy that restricts social security support for some children: the household benefit cap. Your Departmentβs own impact assessment for the Universal Credit (Removal of Two Child Limit) Bill says 50,000 families will see no financial gain at all from the removal of the two- child limit because they are subject to the household benefit cap. Another 20,000 families in the first year will see only a partial gain before the cap applies to them as well.3 As a result, over 200,000 children living in deep poverty will continue to be penalised simply because they are part of a larger family. This directly contradicts the principle articulated by the Chancellor and undermines the stated aim of lifting children out of poverty. The Green Party is calling on you to make the right decision now, rather than relying on a future U-turn, and to widen the scope of the Universal Credit (Removal of Two Child Limit) Bill to remove the household benefit cap. No child should be de
Green MPs and Peers have written to the Government calling for the household benefit cap to be scrapped alongside the two-child limit.
Because lifting one cap while keeping another will still leave over 200,000 children in deep poverty.
Child poverty is a political choice β not an inevitability.

Reform could gain another MP this Thursday. That's why we're urging Labour, Lib Dem, & other party supporters to lend their vote to the Greens this time in Gorton & Denton. We've carried out extensive research and it points to this being our best chance of stopping a very real threat from Reform.
