crying about Outer Wilds is the most human thing we can do
Your long read for the week. We reviewed 20 years' worth of property records, permits, county council meeting minutes, assessor data, business records, land plats β and more β to track how a derelict Western Maryland farm became the site of an emerging ICE concentration camp.

Salvador Daliβs The Persistence of Memory, featuring a landscape with melting pocket watches
βHuman art often includes errors of physics. Here, Salvador DalΓ has accidentally painted these pocket watches in a semi-fluid state, when in fact pocket watches are necessarily made out of solid materials. Current GenAI image models have evolved beyond such trifling mistakes.β
βmachines have finally overcome the persistent deficiency of our greatest human writers: the failure to consistently incorporate standard syntax and grammarβ

1) March isn't even halfway over yet.
2) ICE activity has been trickling upward since last week, with more sightings yesterday and already this morning.
This story just didn't need to be published? Maybe they'll surge and maybe they won't, but reporters offer no insight one way or the other.
Oops! Looks like "Chicago Progressive Partnership" (the supposedly separate super PAC running this attack ad) just outed themselves and confirmed the speculation that it's the same group (AIPAC) behind the pro-Fine/anti-Biss super PAC "Elect Chicago Women" aka: ECW
"ECW: You are now opted-out..."
For an upcoming story, I'd like to hear from people who have had an encounter with a stranger recording them on Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses. If that's you or you can pass along this request to someone else who has experienced this, I'm at miles_klee@wired.com or millionbear.44 on Signal. Thanks!
Trump Walks Back Idea That War Is Near End: U.S. Gains 'Not Enough' The president said at a news conference that the fighting is "going to be ended soon" but also backed up Pete Hegseth's saying that the battle is just beginning.

To state the obvious, there's been no proof offered for any of the above. The photo with Ward might be a little concerning to people from outside of Maine, especially because Platner has not directly addressed it. But Ward is well known in the state as a dishonest troll and acknowledging him at all is a mistake-Maine voters of both parties understand that.n
β¦βOnce you allege itβs a fabrication rather than a claim that hasnβt been backed up, itβs on you to prove itβs a lieβ β and that doesnβt apply to you and your blog post because Platnerβs fervent critics are conveniently and self-evidently lunatics?
Who is flexing? Does being on this site just automatically turn you into an asshole? Where's this shot coming from? "My bartender" is a very common term. I actually knew/know the other bartender Ned much better, Graham was his backup. And this was like 15-20 years ago. β’β’β’ Ryan Grim @ryangrim.bsky.social β’ 1d My now-15 year old gave me this haircut when she was 10 during covid and she loves that it still gets circulated by my haters, though she acknowledges it's not her best work. Well, it's her best (and only) haircut. I didn't go back for a second. Also: you guys are shallow, miserab' nennle
Guess Iβm at a loss to understand how Grim, 3 days after making the claim, hasnβt found time between giving details about Platner being his bartender, and defending his daughters haircut, simply hasnβt posted the ostensibly easily obtainable proof that Platnerβs wife is Jewish?β¦
The reporter making the assertion is generally obligated to provide proof. Or you believe that Grimβs evidence-free claim is by default true until proven otherwise? Is that mindset substantively different than the anti-Platner βlunacyβ that you call out?
If I wrote βIndependent journalists have justified opposed Mills because sheβs old and is unimpressive in the polls. But the current state of independent journos shilling for Platner includes fabricating a Jewish identity for his wifeβ β would that be fair?

Much of the anger toward the oysterman-turned-Democratic-Party-upstart is due to his own mistakes, both in the past and on the campaign trail. In 2007, while on leave fromthe Marines in Croatia, Platner drunkenly got a tattoo of the Totenkopf, the German death's head symbol commonly associated with the Nazis. After the tattoo became an issue, he had it covered up. Platner claims he had no idea about the image's Nazi association until last October. Recently, Platner quote-tweeted an alt-right online personality, Stew Peters, to make a point about no war with Iran; he quickly deleted the post after backlash. He also appeared on a podcast with Nate Cornacchia, a right-wing personality whose show has featured a number of conspiracy theories and borderline to outright racist content. That's the primary concern for liberal and left resistance to his campaign. There are other issues that give people pause-the fact that he volunteered for war in the first place,
I am neither condemning nor defending Platner here, but setting the scene, because some of his centrist and left critics have devolved into absolute full-blown lunacy. Here is, as far as I can tell, the state of the current attacks on Platner: β’ he is part of a decade plus conspiracy on the part of a cabal of Senate Democrats to infiltrate the party with progressive seeming men who then tilt right β’ he maybe bought a domain years ago, GrahamForSenate.com, this proves that the run was in the works β’ the Marines wouldn't allow him back in because of the chest tattoo β’ a local neo-Nazi who plays gotcha with local politicians, Richard Ward, posted a photo of himself wearing a shirt with
tbh I think it feels a bit dismissive how you frame recent claims (most of which I agree are spurious) as βthe state of the current attacksβ β as if the concerns you list at the start are too old/well-trodden to be an actual foundation for someoneβs principled and current opposition to Platner
Happening now at the Broadview, IL ICE facility: waiting for a press conference on the story of Sundas "Sunny" Naqvi, a US citizen who was reportedly detained by federal immigration agents at O'Hare Airport Thursday and ended up released from a detention facility in Wisconsin early Saturday morning.

Could local officials block ICE from building more detention facilities? How could one find out if oneβs local police department is cooperating with ICE?
You asked, we answered nine questions on how localities are responding to ICE.
the dumbest form of politics is yelling at voters after you lose. if you lose it is *always* your fault. every confounding factor in the universe is your job to overcome. if you take a position that is unpopular and don't adjust to learning that, you are bad at running for office.
This is horrific.
I had a good friend who was a producer at Pixar for many years and she peaced out a couple years ago and everyone was shocked because the place looks amazing from afar but she said the absolute wrong people are making decisions and I guess that makes more sense now
