This is also why we can’t keep having these pro-censorship beliefs as artists. Being pro-censorship creates a culture of policing and community governance that mimics fascist censorship policies, making it easier for governments to convince people these policies are good and really do ‘protect kids’
They fear us so much because those of us who have lived such extensive experiences with exploitation (and at times, slavery) have a uniquely powerful understanding of abolition work—especially those of us inhabiting intersectional marginalization.
It also fragments survivors and survivor leaders. I had to stop being a public trafficking survivor-educator because of laws like this. Every other trans survivor leader I knew also had to step back.
They ALSO prevent online activism and organizing. If you combine censorship plus government surveillance (plus stripping trans people of IDs!), you fragment liberation work.
They’re afraid of trans people and sex workers. We’re too powerful, bc we have a history of meaningful liberation action.
You know what these online “child safety” laws actually do?
Isolate queer kids and make it easier for them to be abused, unhoused, and trafficked.
Isolate disabled kids, especially those experiencing sexual abuse.
Destroy online sex worker networks, forcing them back onto more dangerous streets.
