Lovely piece. When you say that All These Years volume 2 is "in production," well...... does that mean in ML's computer, or perhaps somewhere else? Interesting choice of words, I thought,

Maconie says that volume 2 of All These Years is "in production." That's often a term of art for a book being in the hands of a publisher, going through copyediting, typesetting, rights clearance, etc. If that's the case, big news. If not, not. But a striking phrase nonetheless.
They are also not very bright people.
Brown is out! They had to do more dancing in their letter because they previously capitulated and needed to reference their previous agreement but, at its core, this reiterates MIT's letter.
The clock is now on for all other institutions.

Thank you!
“The humanities are not a luxury,” said @paulakrebs.bsky.social. “They are a necessity, teaching people vital skills, including how to effectively communicate, construct arguments, evaluate evidence, and build connections across cultures."
@acls1919.bsky.social, the AHA, & @modernlanguage.bsky.social filed a lawsuit in federal district court today, seeking to reverse the recent actions of the NEH to devastate the agency, including the elimination of grant programs, staff, and entire divisions and programs. 🗃️
Go get ‘em.
A version of Shelley's "England in 1819": "An old, bad, vain despised, and lying prez/ Cronies, sycophants, corrupt, and now in charge; / A tech czar, with a job chain-saw, at large; / A loony with a brain worm who now says:/ All the things that saved us will be banned--/ Flouride in our water, every good vaccine;/ Judges bought and sold, and courts unseen,/ To see that justice triumphs in the land/ In charge of schools, a monstrous wrestler's wife,/ Who's called AI "A 1"--a sauce for steak-/ And been herself 'instructed' how to break / The DOE, and higher ed, a vengeful strife--/Are graves from which some glorious phantom may/ Burst to illumine our tempestuous day."
Percy Shelley should be living at this hour--and James Chandler, publishing this version of Shelley's "England in 1819" in Counter Punch, on April 21st, agrees. #Romanticism, #19thc
Congratulations! This is fantastic news (and we need such news!)
Thanks. We'd be glad to talk if you'd like. I'm sure you're hearing from all over. Good luck with the essay!
It was a 303,000 grant, so kind of essential.
Our digital "anthology" of literature in English, which had a level 3 DH Advancement grant (and which I'm using in a class * right now*) got cancelled mid-stream. See anthologydev.lib.virginia.edu/index.html. We're not sure where we go from here.
My friend and mentor Orville Schell puts very clearly what many people with experience in 20th century China are thinking:
The parallels with the nihilism and chaos-for-its-own-sake of the Cultural Revolution years.

Two large posters on off white paper with blue ink reading: NO TYRANTS! & NO KINGS! In large wood type font. There is a large image cut of a wooden printing press with a banner of text above it reading “THE TYRANTS FOE THE PEOPLES FRIEND”
I heard the NEA is only considering proposals related to 1776 & the USA’s 250th birthday & I was feeling intensely patriotic, so I’m printing these really big posters inspired *directly* by the Founding Fathers
The cut was carved from the masthead of a 19th century newspaper
Luna wishes everyone a Merry Christmas!
The image is a humorous meme featuring a classical painting of a man with white hair depicted in two panels. Top panel: The man looks contemplative, with text reading, “When I was 9, I couldn’t afford that $110 Lego set,” followed by, “But now I’m an adult. I think I shall buy it.” A small inset image in the corner shows the box art of the “Lego Black Seas Barracuda 6285” set, featuring a pirate ship with red-and-white sails. Bottom panel: The man now looks shocked while holding a piece of paper. Below him is a screenshot from an online listing for the same Lego set, labeled “Lego Black Seas Barracuda 6285 MINT New condition 1989 original…” with a price of $19,089.00. The listing also notes “or Best Offer,” “Free local pickup,” and “18 watchers.” The meme humorously contrasts childhood aspirations with the reality of adult purchasing power and the inflated value of collectible items.
For real though, there are a bunch of old sets that go for five figures
So is it safe to post now?
Scrivener perfection achieved; next level unlocked.
