What does Chinaโs emerging governance regime for big tech look like & how does it differ from that of the US?
My new article explores these questions by tracing Alibabaโs evolving ties with central and local governments, and theorizes this dynamic as a MARKET IN A FRAGMENTED STATE.

How Chinaโs E-Commerce Boom Charts a Digital Path to Growth - Politics and Rights Review
In merely 20 years, China leapfrogged developed economies to build an e-commerce market with 800 million users, capturing nearly 50% of global online retail sales.
Professor Lizhi Liu ( @lizhiliu.bsky.social ) examines how Chinaโs e-commerce grew despite weak legal frameworks. Digital platforms built private institutions, shaping governance and consumer trust. Available in open access in English, French, and Spanish. #PoliticsAndRightsReview

Interestingly, the term 'ๅคงไผ่ฏๅฎก' (public assessor) was borrowed from the Chinese singing show Super Girl, which used 31 public assessors to determine the contest winners. Taobaoโs jury system similarly started with 31 assessors (later lowered to 13)

My interview suggests that it was not a direct replication but more of a platform innovation inspired by studying the jury system in the United States.

You Be the Judge: How Taobao Crowdsourced Its Courts
In this excerpt from Lizhi Liuโs new book, โFrom Click to Boom,โ the author explores how Taobao tried to democratize its dispute resolution system.
Sixth Tone just published an excerpt of my book "From Click to Boom," where I explore the rise of online institutions in China, their role in addressing governance gaps left by the state, as well as their limitations.

Ok, Xiaohongshu (Rednote) is NOT named after Maoโs Little Red Book but after the dominant color of Stanford where the founder got an MBA. It has a capitalist origin! m.36kr.com/p/1724258762...

Thanks, Yeling, for sharing the news that my book is being sold and ranked #20 in the business section at Singapore Airport! Itโs a delightful surprise to see an academic bookโeven with its long appendix of statistics and regressionsโcapturing interest beyond academia.

Click, Trust, Prosper - The Wire China
In this book excerpt, Lizhi Liu takes a look at how e-commerce platforms filled a crucial void in China's political economy.
In her new book, From Click to Boom, @lizhiliu.bsky.social tells the story of eBay vs. Taobao in the early 2000s, and how the combination of the platformโs clever innovations with Beijingโs strategic non-action allowed Chinaโs commerce to flow in ways it never had before. https://buff.ly/3B5xNDp
