I do think it's accidental tbh. The issues with AoT's ending reads more to me as being a product of incompetent storytelling than it does as having any form of overt malice.

I don't think that's true honestly. Most people were engaging with the narrative honestly, and haphazardly cutting it down at the ankles out of spite for the ones who didn't is ridiculous. If that was that intention, I genuinely think that's worse than just failing to live up to Part 1.

I think that's a completely worthless end goal. There was no one forcing Fujimoto to make a Part 2. But maybe I'm missing something.

There was no emotional weight to it because everyone was convinced that it was a fakeout, and then it didn't even have the long term consequences on the narrative needed to serve a functional purpose.

I don't think CSM P2 needed a main antagonist. I think it needed to have a purpose other than "shit happens and everything sucks I guess." P1 got that point across just fine. P2 doesn't add anything to it. It didn't even need to exist tbh. It could have done something with Asa, but she got sidelined

I'll give Fujimoto this. At least he didn't channel his meandering misanthropy into some accidental pro-genocide shit. That seems like a low bar to clear, but Isayama didn't manage to, so... apparently it's not a given.
