1908: the Lancet, one of the most respected scientific journals, calls for 18 age limit on reading in bed amidst a moral panic surrounding children becoming "addicted" to novels, which were "designed to keep kids hooked" and destroy their attention/mental health

Are we really overdiagnosing mental illness?
It’s tempting to dismiss the proliferation of labels as a fad, but there’s more to this phenomenon than a simple culture-war reading allows
I'm in the Guardian today, writing about the question of overdiagnosis of mental illness. I argue we need to stop seeing this as a binary yes/no question - is overdiagnosis happening or is the increase real? - and acknowledge that multiple things can be happening at once

Modern academic publishing part II: Sage has now blocked my (university) IP address because I have had a tab open for >4 hours since my license does not allow downloading. I now have to write my colleagues an email so that I can read papers that they are already paying an annual fee of ~100K€ for.

"People can feel the future (p. <.05)" in contrast to a default ESCI plot from Jamovi. Personally, I think tool defaults are way more important than experts (who dont need them) realize.

Soft Drink Consumption and Depression Mediated by Gut Microbiome Alterations
This cohort study examines the association between soft drink consumption and major depressive disorder diagnosis and severity and whether this association is mediated by changes in the gut microbiota...
This one surely has something on offer for every one: In this cross-sectional mediation analysis, the "effects" of soft drink consumption on depression were "mediated" by abundance of Eggerthela in the gut microbiome.
This was sent to me via dm and now you all got to suffer as well.

Our new paper is out today! 🎉 In it, we use administrative register data to document how psychiatric disorders are strongly linked to parental income, from childhood far into adulthood. Furthermore, we attempt to separate causation and selection using kinship-based models.

📉 The findings suggest an under-recognized high-risk group:
Individuals with low cognitive abilities + low education are particularly vulnerable to develop a mental illness.

🔍 We used sibling fixed-effects models to control for shared family background—some genetics, upbringing, socioeconomic status, etc.
📌 So differences in mental health risk can’t be explained by shared family environment.

🧬 Why is this study so robust?
✅ Huge sample: 272,351 men
✅ Nationwide administrative data
✅ Diagnoses from hospital records—not self-report
✅ Cognitive scores from mandatory military screening. In our cohorts, basically every male in the population was required to participate.

🎓 Educational attainment also independently predicted better mental health.
But the highest risk was for men who were low in both cognition and education.
This group faced the highest probability of adult psychiatric diagnoses.

🧠 Higher cognitive ability at age 18 predicted lower risk of all psychiatric disorders at ages 36–40—especially substance abuse.
✅ This held even when comparing brothers raised in the same family.
