#Mswl: literary voice-driven middle grade w/a high-concept hook; speculative/fantasy or slice-of-life but I want to see gorgeous, engaging prose or verse; profound coming-of-age themes; and beautifully drawn characters. If it’s a heavier story, there should be love and hope reverberating throughout

And yes, 40k is good. I had a 60k MG fantasy go on subs and last summer an editor said it was too long.

I have a subscription to publishers marketplace, and there are so many GN getting published now and not many novels. No hate on GN, but for novel MG writers, it’s depressing.

Mine is around 35k. It originally was longer. I do still see some longer books being acquired. It’s just more recently that I have heard the desire for lower word count. I feel like everything is arbitrary in this industry.

Middle grade authors – the industry is looking for high concept, strong hook books, with a low word count. If anybody can figure out what that is, let’s let each other know. That way we can all write that and save this age group. Thank you.😅❤️ #kidlit #writingcommunity
