December 11th is Kaleidoscope Day, commemorating the birthday of Scottish scientist Sir David Brewster, who invented the kaleidoscope in 1816.
Love the pop-up tree in the new edition of @patriciatoht.bsky.socialβs lovely book!
Front cover of the picture book The Rock in My Throat by Kao Kalia Yang, illustrated by Jiemei Lin. It depicts a young girl with black, chin-length hair and bangs with wide eyes and rosy cheeks. Over her throat is a depiction of a small gray rock, and she is holding her right hand just beneath the rock. Behind her is a floral motif in various shades of blue as well as the bare branches of a tree. In the top right is a subtle depiction of a gray and white feather, which is symbolically important later in the story.
Front cover of We Are the Scrappy Ones with words by Rebekah Taussig and art by Kirbi Fagan. It depicts six children with various skin tones and disabilities holding hands to form a star shape as they float on a starry background.
Front cover of the picture book Rewriting the Rules: How Dr. Kathleen Friel Created New Possibilities for Brain Research and Disability. It features Dr. Friel, a pale-skinned woman with rosy cheeks and shoulder-length brown hair, wearing a white lab coat. Her right arm and leg are turned inward and her right hand is curled under due to her cerebral palsy. One her right is a child with light brown skin and medium brown hair, wearing a yellow striped t-shirt, blue pants, and blue shoes. He uses black forearm crutches. To Dr. Friel's left is a child with dark brown skin and black hair that goes midway down their back, wearing a pale blue polka dotted shirt and a red-orange knee-length skirt. The child is blowing on a dandelion to send the seeds flying. Surrounding the three human figures are dandelions (which are associated with cerebral palsy) and fantastical flowers and trees that incorporate the shapes of neurons.
Front cover of the picture book Stokes: The Brief Career of the NBA's First Black Superstar by Ty Chapman and John Coy, illustrated by Lonnie Ollivierre. It shows dark-skinned basketball player jumping up and holding the ball with both hands, as though about to take a shot. He wears a dark blue uniform with orange stripes and ROYALS 12 on the front. He's flanked by one player with light skin and one with medium brown skin, both of whom are wearing white uniforms with great trim, with CELTICS visible on one jersey. A Royals player with light skin and dark brown hair is visible in the background, and farther back there's a hint of a crowd of fans.
Yesterday the UN marked The International Day of Disabled Persons. Here are four picture books I highly recommend for everyone!
So happy to see my friend Jill Esbaum's It's Corn Picking Time! on the Chicago Public Library's Best Informational Books for Younger Readers of 2025! tinyurl.com/mscc4w4b
A broken brown crayon is arranged so the tip points downward, with the broken end positioned above a drawing. The drawn figure is a bundled-up child in winter clothing holding a mug with a heart on it. A line from the crayonβs broken bit, connects to the mug as if pouring liquid into it.
You never know what will come out of a broken crayon. #Uplift

#KidLitMegaFeed #kidlit #picturebooks #JaneGoodall
As a reading specialist, I'd use Goodall's picture book, DR. WHITE, with 2nd graders--a true story about a dog who visited hospital patients. Students used higher level thinking skills to answer: Should dogs be allowed in hospitals? Why/why not?

Pat Zietlow Miller's new book, ONE CAN BE, celebrates the need to sometimes be alone and work alone...AND the need, at times, to collaborate. Kirkus's one-line tagline: "An empathetic tale that proves anyone can make a difference."
