An ACLU of Michigan legal fellow and a colleague visiting a potential client detained at Michiganβs largest ICE detention facility had to remove their bras just to enter the building.
But the indignity they experienced was only a glimpse of the cruelty people detained inside face every day.
On March 11 from 7-8pm, join ACLU-MI and @Michimmigrant for a Know Your Rights Townhall to learn what you need to know when encountering immigration enforcement.

SLAPP suits are lawsuits designed to silence people for speaking out. This week, Michigan lawmakers unanimously passed a bipartisan anti-SLAPP bill.
Not sure what a SLAPP suit is or why it matters? Our Legislative Director Kyle Zawacki breaks it down in this episode of The Lansing Lowdown.
A big bipartisan win today for the freedom of speech for all Michiganders!
Today, House Bill 4045, a bill that will put important protections in place to dismiss SLAPP suits, was passed unanimously by the Michigan legislature and will have immediate effect with the Governorβs signature. #SLAPP

In the first 9 months of the Trump presidency, at least 22 people have died while in ICE custody. In the spirit of the Day of the Dead, many gathered outside the Grand Rapids ICE field office on Saturday to honor the lives lost.
βThey are still providing hormone therapy protocols for cisgender patients, which does raise civil rights issues,β said Kaplan. βWeβve spoken to families. Weβve encouraged them to file complaints with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights and request that it be investigated.β
In Michigan, where state civil rights protections extend to transgender people, U-M and Corewellβs decisions to stop providing gender-affirming care to trans minors appears to be βclearly discriminatory,β according to ACLU-MI staff attorney Jay Kaplan.

for fear that they or their family members will be questioned, detained, or deported.
Local law enforcement agencies exist to protect and serve all Michigan residents, including our immigrant communities. 287(g) agreements harm public safety as they discourage our immigrant neighbors to report crimes...
On Monday night, community members packed the Center Line City Council meeting to voice their opposition β and it worked! Less than 48 hours later, Center Line announced that it has rescinded the ICE agreement.
Recently, Center Line entered into a 287(g) agreement with ICE. These agreements are part of the Trump administrationβs cruel and aggressive deportation agenda.
