They were spending money in the former east in that period (Berlin Hbf, Leipzig cross city route), but relatively little in the west. DBβs priority from the early 1990s has been to almost completely rebuild the former DR network and thatβs presumably why thereβs been less investment elsewhere.
Having just got back from an Interrail, lots of niggly delays in Germany for a variety of reasons. Many parts of the UK network are as busy or busier than DB, but are better run these days.
Was there today catching up with a couple of friends. The current arrangement is a very temporary. There will be routes on both sides of the road and the cycle lanes should predominantly be one way. It was very busy when I walked through there at lunchtimeβ¦. mainly peds.
But legally, shared use footways are cycle tracks, so this is very messy.
A day to appreciate the benefits of street trees
It does look like an increase, which is good news. As ever, weβll need to wait for more clarity. Another dimension is Local Government Reorganisation and I guess this funding may come through the new Strategic Authoritiesβ¦again weβll need to wait and see how itβs going to work.
Sorry yes Β£bns! Iβm guessing this is the BSIP, Active Travel Fund and Integrated Transport Block capital money in a single pot but as you say, with the flexibility on where itβs spent. Hopefully weβll get more details soon.
Need more clarity as the DfT section in the Spending Review refers to what looks like a single pot of capital funding for local transport infra including cycleways
A small extract from todayβs Spending Review on local transport capital expenditure. We await more details, but guessing this is the planned single pot of funding that will combine BSIP and the Active Travel Fund outside the City Regions with elected mayors.
Whilst none of us can definitely prove it, it does sadly look like she was pushed from the inside. Seems a bit unlikely that a journalist had been randomly looking through court records and found this conviction. The PM clearly wasnβt happy with her comments about P&O a little while ago.
Itβs sad though, as she was a decent SoS for Transport and we donβt get too many of those.
She was wise to go now, as thatβs what always happens in the end anyway, once the media circus starts.
It does look that way to my eyes. Most journalists would be too lazy to find this information for themselvesβ¦.and we do know who did know about this.
A large proportion are already been built in places where itβs very difficult to provide decent public transport and are totally car dependent, so thatβs exactly what will happen. New towns offer a better solution, but canβt see much happening with those on the ground in the next 5 years.
So conclusion is itβs just too much when I have to carry all this stuff and Iβm going to have to drive. Frustrating, as Iβd rather catch the train. When I donβt need the electric uke or work stuff, itβs manageable on the train. At least I tried π
I have worked out to carry all this stuffβ¦electric uke & rucksack on my back, amp in left hand and suitcase & other uke in right handβ¦but it is hard work on the 20-25 min walk to / from the venue. One of the hardest things were ticket barriers with no spare hands to deal with the ticket! (2/3)
As I hate driving, tried going to regular ukulele jam on the train yesterday. I need to bring lots of stuffβ¦.two ukesβ¦electric & normal. Amp. Wheelie suitcase with pedal board, leads, music stand etc. Small rucksack with work stuff. (1/3)
Modal shift of short journeys to active travel has really important and significant benefits in terms of public health, air quality, noise, quality of place, with CO2 reduction a less significant benefit. This is confirmed by the outputs from ATEβs own Active Modes Appraisal Toolkit. (2/2)
I need to look again at the numbers, but from memory, most transport CO2 emissions are from journeys over 5 miles, so if CO2 reduction is your primary objective, then those are the journeys that need to be targeted.

This one is doing the rounds again, for (I presume) obvious reasons.
All good thanks John and hope youβre well.
