In de kaartencollectie van de @vuamsterdam.bsky.social bevindt zich een zogeheten ontsnappingskaart. Deze werden meegegeven aan piloten en luchtlandingstroepen om hun weg te vinden als hun vliegtuig neerstortte of bij droppings in onbekend vijandelijk terrein. edu.nl/pcnu4

Visited the small, but well executed #exhibition “De geboorte van de stad. Op zoek naar #middeleeuws #Amsterdam “ [The Birth of the City. In Search of #Medieval Amsterdam] at the Amsterdam City #Archives.
What struck me most were everyday items of common people, like leather shoes and wooden tools.

This is the Grote Kerk (Grand Church) in Elst. It has a long history of worship going all the way back to prehistoric times.
Under the current late medieval building have been found the remains of Roman temples, and before, a pagan open air place of worship.

Van het “Guineesch jufferbokje” en de — weinig charmant — opgezette “slingeraap” uit Suriname tot de kaarten van kapitein James Cook. Met alle koloniale complexiteit die aan deze voorwerpen kleeft.
Het tonen spreekt enorm tot de verbeelding. Daar kan geen kennisclip of PowerPoint tegenop!
Show & Tell! Het academisch jaar 24/25 zit er voor mijn bijdrage aan de RUG weer op. Op 12 april zal ik nog flitspresentaties geven voor aankomende studenten tijdens de Bachelor’s Open Dag. Maar de werkcolleges zijn afgerond.
Het onderwijs verrijkt met (vroegmodern) materiaal uit eigen collectie.

The relationship between #church and #cartography in early modern times is not as far fetched as it may sound. In fact churches were used as reference points for triangulation purposes. Surveyors and #mapmakers climbed church towers to get a good overview of cities and surroundings.

Questioning whether the drawn aeroplane on the envelope represents reality the friendly staff of Museum #Aviodrome answered me that indeed it does. The picture (2) they sent me confirms that it is a #Fokker C.II plane and this was the method to take aerial photos in the 1920s and 1930s. Amazing!

Nederlandse media doen er goed aan hetgeen gisteren in de Oval Office plaatsvond geen “ruzie” te noemen. Ik zag twee pestkoppen proberen een staatshoofd in de hoek te zetten door hem te vernederen en te intimideren. Wat een treurig (en beangstigend) schouwspel.

Roman cavalry helmet found as offering in the Waal river. Displayed at an exhibition in Museum Bastei, Nijmegen.
Visited the exhibition #romeinsewaalschatten in Museum Bastei in the city of Nijmegen.
It is about artefacts found in and around the Waal river from the times of the Roman Empire.
Like this beautiful cavalry helmet, ca 100-200. It is likely thrown in the river as an offering for a god.

This colourful, and rather unknown, map of the Dutch province of Noord-Holland is my #mapmonday pick. It shows spots where the population grew (brownish) and declined (blueish) between 1937 and 1939.

Dat zijn ze zeker! Geloof het of niet, maar ik nam afgelopen week het boek ‘Zwart in Rembrandts Tijd’ mee naar het college om het (kort) te hebben over dit onderwerp. Fijn dat jouw artikel in dat boek online staat. Ik zal het delen met de studenten.
Terechte aandacht voor deze gemeenschap in 17e eeuws Amsterdam, Mark. Ik heb de serie, en specifiek ook dit onderwerp, onder de aandacht gebracht bij eerstejaars studenten tijdens mijn colleges Vroegmoderne Geschiedenis in Groningen.
Het Spaanse Spook blijft mijn S+W favoriet. En het losse stripverhaal van Tijl Uijlenspiegel.
