I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this study and congratulations to Johanne who has just successfully completed her PhD with this project and started a postdoc position at Aalborg University!
They found that psychotherapy for BPD did improve interpersonal functioning, maybe particularly strongly in individuals also suffering from anxiety disorders or an overall greater number of co-occuring disorders.
The psychotherapies employed included Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) but also a digital intervention based on Schema Therapy, priovi.
Therefore, Johanne Pereira Ribeiro from Denmark and colleagues conducted an individual patient data meta-analysis (IPD-MA) including more than 2700 participants from 32 RCTs were psychotherapy was compared to treatment as usual (TAU) or clinical management (CM).
It is unclear if psychotherapy for BPD also has an effect on interpersonal functioning and whether this effect is stronger in certain individuals.
Psychotherapy for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) does have an effect on overall symptoms of BPD. But individuals with BPD often suffer from interpersonal difficulties and these can severely affect daily functioning.
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to contribute to this important study.

This trial published today in found that individuals who use the DMHI mylovia reported greater improvements in sexual functioning than those who received treatment as usual (which, for many, meant no treatment at all) with a medium effect size (d = 0.51).
Overall, this โtreatment gapโ is more than 50%, but it is especially pronounced for female sexual dysfunction, possibly because patients (and sometimes also their therapists) can be reluctant to talk about sexual health.
One of the main advantages of Digital Mental Health Interventions (DMHIs) is their ability to reach individuals who would otherwise never receive treatment.
Perfect, thanks Tim! I came across that paper but then lost it. Glad you helped me find it again!
@tkaiser.science do you also have the link to the paper from the perspective of radical behaviorism? Thanks!

I am extremely grateful that I will have the opportunity to present this CBS Superlab with Michael Muthukrishna, Sigal Zilcha-Mano, Steven C. Hayes and Kirk Strosahl. It will be one of my highlights of 2026.
Congratulations Johanne on this excellent work! It was a pleasure being a contributor to this study; I particularly admired your attentiveness to detail and the skilfulness in integrating the numerous perspectives we co-authors offered in the writing process. Well done!

Most patients included in this IPD-MA were treated with either Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT) or a digital intervention based on Schema Therapy (priovi). The treatment effect was not affected by whether the treatment was online or in person.
Psychotherapy seemed to be less effective for individuals who also suffered from depression or reported sexual abuse.
This IPD-MA looked at numerous patient characteristics and found that borderline patients with comorbid anxiety disorder or comorbid substance use disorder derive the greatest benefit from psychotherapy.
IPD-MA are better than conventional meta-analyses at identifying which patient groups benefit most from a given treatment.
Psychotherapy for individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder is effective, maybe more so when certain comorbidities are present. That is the result of a large individual participant data meta-analysis (IPD MA) just published by Johanne Pereira Ribeiro Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics.
