The area burned in the Canadian 2025 fire season has hit 5 million ha. Third active fire season in a row that combined has burned 7% of the Canadian forest. Currently we have 346 fires out of control (192 monitored out of control (OC) and 154 OC that are being actioned) so expect the number to rise.
We recommend that fire management strategies for preserving biodiversity should consider both social and ecological factors, iterative learning informed by effective monitoring, and developing and testing new management actions. An integrated approach to learning about fire and biodiversity will help to navigate the complexities of novel fire regimes and preserve biodiversity in a rapidly changing world.
2) The use of fire to preserve biodiversity under novel fire regimes

We synthesize recent research on fire use and biodiversity, and provide a decision-making framework for biodiversity conservation under novel fire regimes.

Tropical forests are not all the same: they show many shades of geographical variation. Our new paper in Nature led by @jeaggu.bsky.social combines field and satellite data to make a first map the canopy functional traits of the worldβs tropical forests: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
In our new paper in @science.org, we show that tropical forests are changing over time, but too slowly to track climate change. Our article, led by @jeaggu.bsky.social just out:

Burning of #peatland during dry years drove UK #wildfire carbon emissions from 2001-2021. Peat #emissions are expected to rise by 60% solely via drier conditions increasing potential burn depths under a +2C global warming scenario. Led by Sarah Baker. iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...
Hello plant world, does anyone have a pdf of Lacey & Whelan 1976 from Australian Forestry? Fabulously titled "Observations on the ecological significance of vegetative reproduction in the Katherine-Darwin Region of the Northern Territory".
NEW: NSF confirmed that they fired 168 employees today, out of their staff of ~1,500 feds.
This includes some people who'd finished their 1-year probationary periods, which were extended to 2-years last month without explanation. More to come.
I couldn't have asked for a better place to start a career than Cambridge, and look forward to maintaining all our ongoing projects throughout the transition.
Pleased to announce that the Pellegrini group will be moving to Stanford University to join the Department of Earth System Science in the Doerr School of Sustainability in Sept. 2025. If you're interested in working on Qs regarding how systems respond to global change, contact me!

This is figure 2 from βA year above 1.5βΒ°C signals that Earth is most probably within the 20-year period that will reach the Paris Agreement limit.β It shows strong warming trends place the first 1.5βΒ°C year within the 1.5βΒ°C 20-year period.
Two papers in Nature Climate Change suggest that exceeding 1.5 Β°C in 2024 may indicate that we have entered a multi-decadal period of 1.5 Β°C average global warming.
