A good-news story in the province’s fourth city, nice! What’s going on in the capital?

Oh… really, really bad you say?

Nah, run the feel-good. We need something nice to follow disabled support cuts and health care cuts.

‘Mass Death on This Scale Is Incomprehensible’

“Are we going to let [this crisis] continue indefinitely? Because it won’t change by itself”

An important read from @kwardvancouver.bsky.social and @michellegamage.bsky.social

Masking prevents transmission. Please, mask up. It's literally the most basic amount of community care and, if you're broke like me, check out donatemask.ca for free masks.
If you also need or want Covod tests, they often have those available for free as well.

Almost like shutting down safe consumption sites and funneling money away from harm reduction and into abstinence grifting makes things less safe and increases harms. This is consistent with decades of data and was completely predictable.

Can’t stress enough that it’s actually extremely economically beneficial for everybody in a community if fewer people overdose and die

Do I know that landlords might make slightly less profit if I ask my governments to regulate rents?

Yes.

Do I still want them to do that?

FUCK YES.

Overdose prevention centers like OnPoint NYC are a lifeline for people. They ensure that people have a place to stay warm, medical care, outreach, & a safe place indoors instead of on the street. Over three days of freezing temperatures last week, OnPoint stayed open 24hrs to keep people alive.

The picture is of the community pantry outwose Westwood Unitarian. The pantry is a wooden purple cupboard sitting on white posts. The door of the pantry is open and inside are lots of canned and dried goods. Several houses are visible in the background and there is white snos on the ground. A brown tree with no leaves is in the background. The sun is shining.

FNB runs a community pantry outside of the Westwood Unitarian Community in Parkallen. Anyone is free at any time to take food if they are hungry or leave dried goods/non-perishable vegan items if they have more than they need. Visit the pantry if you are in need.

Another “Operation Order” police sweep this week. These performative shows of force do not actually tackle the root causes of crime and cost Calgarians $$$$. Mutual aid orgs and unhoused folks face intimidation. Police contact =/= social supports. #yyc #yyccc

🧵 Good morning Edmonton. We're live from the council chambers where the Urban Planning Committee will debate reducing housing options.

There are 60 speakers registered so there's a high chance this becomes two days. We'll be live posting so follow along to see how it goes!

U of A looks to remove EDI from hiring policy | CBC News The University of Alberta is proposing to eliminate Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) from its hiring policy, a year after the school initially said it was moving away from the term.

New emails obtained by CBC through access of information show that before announcing the end of EDI at the University of Alberta, the president sent his announcement to the UCP before publication.

How's that for institutional neutrality?

A fake-spring was blooming on Jasper Ave. this week. It won't last. When February air in Edmonton doesn't hurt your face, it's a #win. Go for stroll. Jump a few puddles.

I am hoping to give a talk to local poets in spring about how I see poetry and photography as artistic siblings. One way they diverge, is around timing.

Alberta seeks court dismissal for lawsuit challenging opioid-prescribing rules — The Globe and Mail Judge granted injunction in 2023 that exempted woman from rules, allowing her to continue using prescribed hydromorphone at home

“The gov't says they want people to recover and I have done that. I built my life piece by piece. Dragging this back to court and losing the privacy I have built, that is going to cause harm to my life, my reputation. I’m just confused honestly. Why this? Why now?” #ableg

Look out for unhoused neighbours, especially now. Share & donate to #MutualAid shelter funds. Donate directly by giving blankets, mitts, toques, clean dry socks, a couple of bucks, whatever you can spare. Cold weather kills.
