This analysis was made possible through the development of a statistically-based, custom pipeline, enabling authors to classify ~19 million OBIS records as either benthic or pelagic datasets. Weβre thrilled to say that both the final datasets, and the code to recreate them are #OpenAccess too!
So, if we are to prioritise ocean biodiversity data collection to deliver a sustainable ocean, where should we focus?
These gaps matter π β biodiversity data fuels conservation π’, climate models π‘οΈ, and ocean planning π. But if your model is trained on fish π in shallow waters, it probably wonβt help protect deep-sea invertebrates πͺΈ 3,000 meters below. Weβre building global policy on patchy foundations π§±β.
And the pelagic data distribution is no betterβ¦
Key findings from the benthic dataset show just how little of the seafloor below 30 m weβve sampled:
Despite decades of exploration, we still can't fully answer βWhere is marine life found, and why?β. A new study in @commsearth.nature.com shows just how skewed our ocean data really isβ¦
πMapping the Gaps: New global study reveals huge biases in benthic & pelagic biodiversity data β but what does this mean for science & conservation, & how can we address it? Excellent talk at #17DSBS by @georgeimatsumoto.bsky.social outlining MBARIβs research internship! So often we see predatory internships & positions in conservation requiring skilled work for free because itβs βgood experienceβ. Great to see an institution leading the way in equitable internships! ππΌ
We are very excited to announce that the next Deep-Sea Biology Symposium will be held in Bergen π³π΄ in 2028!! π₯³
The conference will be a collaboration between the Centre for Deep Sea Research, the UiB Dept of Biological Sciences, the University Museum, Institute of Marine Research and NORCE. ππͺΈππ«§π

Ever wondered where weβve sampled and where we havenβt? Well if you came to my talk, then now you know! Huge thanks to #17DSBS for having me present our recent work in the strategic prioritisation of biodiversity data collection πΊοΈ π. As always, it was a wonderful space to share this science in!
Great to see our global habitat classification presented at #17DSBS by Prof. Kerry Howell! We hope this work contributes to the ongoing conversation on the efficacy of our current & future ocean conservation efforts πΊοΈ π. Come say hi if you have any questions!
Delighted to be in #HongKong for the @dsbsoc.bsky.socialβs #17DSBS at #HKUST! Itβs only day 1 & my brain is already teeming with cutting edge scientific findings from todayβs presentations!
β DOSI Day 2025 β
Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for a brilliant DOSI Day at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology!
