Life Post Injury-20 Years On - Hannah's Hope 20 years is a long time. Two decades. Part of me sees 20 years on- life post injury as a positive, and part of me still struggles.

I told her she may not get GCSEs, A-levels and a degree but it is not everything. I told her I was currently studying to be a Chartered Accountant and worked part-time. I told her that as long as she was disabled she would experience exclusion and not to let it upset her although it is hard. I told her I had not figured out love, met anyone or had children but I still hoped to. I told her I was a Godmother to 4 gorgeous children. I told her she would speak at the Houses of Parliament and be one of the 100 most influential disabled people in the UK. That she would make a difference and achieve a lot. A scared 15 year old. I told her things will get worse before they get better. I told her she has the best parents and brother and she said she knew. I said no you don't, as the support they are going to give you is a lifeline. I told her she will experience so much, much of it testing and she will spend 4 years in hospital and 1.5 years in a neurological centre 70 miles from home. I told her her leg would break into 5 pieces in hospital and she would have to have two major surgeries for it. Her eyes widened in shock. I told her, as well as her own health, she will endure insurmountable loss of her dear brother. She looked devastated and we both wept. It was the hardest thing to tell her. I told her loosing Ben will not get easier but you will learn to 'live' with it. That some days you will manage and some you will not. I told her her she will eventually describe herself as disabled rather than unwell. Although often use the words chronic illness.
