Individualized mRNA vaccines evoke durable T cell immunity in adjuvant TNBC - Nature In a phase 1 trial, personalized mRNA vaccines tailored to individual tumour mutations in triple-negative breast cancer induced robust, long-lasting T cell responses and improved prognosis.

I remain bullish on personalized cancer vaccines. great to see this for TNBC!

I am currently living the dream (eating loaded nachos and drinking a glass of sauv blanc in a hotel lobby by myself while I decompress by reading a new fantasy book after talking science all day) AMA

Mechanisms linking cytoplasmic decay of translation-defective mRNA to transcriptional adaptation Transcriptional adaptation (TA) is a genetic robustness mechanism through which mutant messenger RNA (mRNA) decay induces sequence-dependent up-regulation of so-called adapting genes. How cytoplasmica...

This is a fascinating paper that reveals defined and clear mechanism for a phenomenon that for some seemed unbelievable- the up regulation of genes paralogous to those with specific types of inactivating mutations. This is called transcriptional adaptation 1/ www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Pleased to share the final version of this behemoth of a paper, now finally published. I guess I can retire now?

More functional data, many thousands of words removed, and a few other updates from last year's preprint.

Tenuous biomedical funding has put first-year Ph.D. students in a bind First-year biomedical graduate students across the country said labs have been hesitant to take them in due to a tenuous funding environment

With continued uncertainty over federal government support for biomedical research, PhD students are struggling to find labs willing to take on new students, @jonathanwosen.bsky.social reports.
New students are the future of US science. www.statnews.com/2026/01/30/f...

Common variation in meiosis genes shapes human recombination and aneuploidy - Nature Analysis of data from pre-implantation genetic testing sheds light on the genetic basis of meiotic-origin aneuploidy, the leading cause of human pregnancy loss, identifying common genetic variants ass...

Pregnancy loss is common in humans, and chromosomal abnormalities are the leading cause. Using genetic data from ~140,000 IVF embryos, we show that maternal variation in meiosis genes influences recombination and aneuploidy risk.

US science after a year of Trump: what has been lost and what remains A series of graphics reveals how the Trump administration has sought historic cuts to science and the research workforce.

Great overview of the damage to science over the past year.

This shows NIH awarded 24% fewer new research awards in FY2025 vs 2024.

The multiyear funding language in the new LHHS bill means we should expect the same amount of new science this year.

independently funded for my entire PhD and postdoc and now, when I need support, the system is collapsing from under me. can't think too deeply about how my family planning timeline affected these things or I go to a dark place ๐Ÿซ

rarely in my career have I been as stressed as I am now: on the (extremely competitive) faculty job market, with a toddler, trying to get an extension on my K99 so I don't lose my R00, while NIH is stretched thin, grant reviews are delayed, and funding is very scarce.
