capcom (used to) do this, but sadly it seems they're keeping denuvo for way longer now.
This use of denuvo (just for the first few months) is something i dont have a big issue with (i still do bc it will still cause issues to some legitimate owners but at least preservation wont be an issue)
so yeah, denuvo sucks and i really hope game publishers finally realize that they lose more money by keeping it long term than by allowing a minority to pirate it
Some publishers use denuvo only for the first few months, which is the most important sales period, where the majority of sales happen
also let's be real, the majority of old game snowdays are simply preserved thru piracy, bc they get delisted, or lost to time, so what happens when this becomes a reality for today's games? there wont be a way to play them.
what happens if (when) denuvo servers go down? your game doesnt work anymore. You'd think the publisher would just release an update to remove it right? but will they? imagine this happens in 40 years, do you really think they will? If media preservation is important to you, denuvo is your enemy
why do i seem to hate denuvo btw? simple, it means you dont own your game, you cant install it on an offline machine, if you use a steam deck and denuvo decides that you need a new token bc idk you changed the sd card or something while youre out without internet you're fucked. and most importantly
So, Sega is paying millions every month or every few months to keep denuvo on these games to "protect them from piracy" when they have already been pirated, this budget could've been used to make the game better, lower the price or idk pay the devs more, literally anything else is more productive
It's simply replacing a .dl file on the game's files and that's it. Since a steam emulator replaces the steam client with a fake version that pretends to be steam, it'll open just fine and will not have any time limits, and since you already got the decrytion key for denuvo, you're set
after you've played that amount of time its as if you didnt have it anymore to the eyes of steam. The game still has denuvo, it's the same files and executable as the full game, but why can it be pirated now?
Simple. You open it once, get the decryption key, then use a steam emulator, done
they also messed it up with the trial for like a dragon infinite wealth, but differently.
They used Steam's "limited trial" feature, which lets you play the game for an amount of time (in this case 4h). This means the same version as the full game is used but steam limits your license to that time
altough afaik on metaphor's demo there is quite a bit of missing files, but since the executable is no longer encrypted and protected by denuvo, it was possible to modify it and use the full game files.
Simply put: It's the full game with a couple of files changed to only allow you to play up to a certain point, so this person made a mod that modifies/adds the original files and there you go, full game.
Previously they messed up in a similar way on Metaphor: ReFantazio.
so what does this mean? In this case, Shin Megami Tensei V Vengance, having denuvo, was impossible to pirate... Until now.
Sega or Atlus (idk who is responsible for this) decided to release a demo. But they did it in the dumbest way possible.
