Birding isn't just a great hobby - it may also help keep your brain sharp!

In a recent CBC article, Bob McDonald discusses the results of a new study where MRI scans compared expert birders with beginners.

I hear you. But this particular study involves large tracks of forest... which is ... lacking in your area :-)
There was an owl study in your area from 2021-2025 as part of the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas. All of us who were involved in the atlas are looking forward to seeing the published results.

I would say the level of sturdiness would depend on your location. We are in the country, so Dave wanted something more robust. Keep cats in and keep other critters out. But we still close it when we leave the property. Dave keeps mulling over making it bigger.

My husband built it. It's an old cupboard, 4 by 4s, & scrap plywood with Hardware cloth & tighter bugscreening. The pastic upside down tub at the top is the entrance. It is against a bedroom window that we open.

You can love both cats and birds!
This is a photo of our catio, which the cats use daily. In summer, we have to shoo them back into the house at night. On cold winter days, they will stick their head out and then quickly scrabble back in. But they still use it daily (Norfolk County, Ontario)

Cats are considered the number one threat to birds in Canada. It's a fascinating and complex conservation issue.

In Ontario, surveyors are needed throughout the road-accessible north; Manitoulin Island; West Guilford (Kennisis Lake); Boulter (Burnt Ridge/rockingham); & Dunrobin (Ridgetop Rd). Just so you know, wait-list members will be prioritised for the Dunrobin route as it is fairly close to Ottawa. #Birds

Meet the Pickerel Frog (Lithobates palustris)!

These leopard-looking amphibians are found in wetlands, lakes, and ponds across southern Canada. They feed on a wide variety of insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates.
