Look, I don't even know you, but I'm here in a hotel with some knockoff Keurig whatever, and my gorgeous, aromatic 1/2 lb. of delicious dark roast and its cone look at me, sadly shrugging their shoulders each morning, and I hear you.

Span, Fr, Eng pre-, hi- & postmodern. Whatever it is, Cervantes saw it coming. Director, Oregon Humanities Center. Deep interest in poetry; deepening interests in vis. art, perf. art. Current pivot: Velázquez, 80s feminisms and the NY art scene.

The hyperlink was once the definitive form of technoutopianism.
In an era when every US pub imagines itself a walled garden, I was frankly shocked by one of the highest circulation pubs in the Anglosphere putting 30+ external links in a story…
…including my newsletter.
The hyperlink is Blueskyism
Thanks also due to Cliff Bentz's office, who are not on bsky, but who were welcoming and thoughtful. ¡Que vivan las humanidades!
Beyond grateful for our Oregon congressional team, for your vocal support for the humanities. Two brilliant, galvanizing days on the Hill. Thank you @humanitiesall.bsky.social and amazing staff in the offices of @merkley.senate.gov @repvalhoyle.bsky.social @repdexteror.bsky.social @wyden.senate.gov
And a spiffy one it is!
And Epstein
1/It was not possibly unlawful; it was unlawful; and it continues to be unlawful. In addition, NEH canceled statutorily required grants to state humanities councils many of which have had to close, harming state arts communities. And guess what: “Western Civilization” is not in the statute.
Spain’s MEP Irene Montero speaking to reporters
Irene Montero: No woman has ever been freed by American bombs or illegal aggression — Not in Syria. Not in Iraq. Not in Afghanistan. It will not happen in Iran either
When they want to sell their oil wars, their wars for profit, their imperial wars — they hide behind women’s rights to justify them
Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez on the Iran War.
"Spain's position at this juncture is clear and forceful. It is the same position we have maintained in Ukraine and also in Gaza.
No to the breaking of international law that protects us all, especially the most defenceless - the civilian population."
I have seen a lot of cursed stuff in my time in academia but this is among the *most* cursed.
Grammarly is generating miniature LLMs based on academic work so that users can have their writing ‘reviewed’ by experts like David Abulafia, who died less than two months ago.
How is it possible that in 2026, students still come to faculty offices and say, "I wasn't in class yesterday. Did we do anything important?"
JOB ALERT! 📜📚
Who wants to be director & curator of special collections & archives at Middlebury College (Vermont!) — & work for a wonderful boss (& one of my favorite people), Rebekah Irwin?

The letter linked below sets out the issues. Well worth reading the whole thing, then looking around for petitions to sign and state and congressional reps to call.
The relentless misogyny that unites and sustains this crew. How is it possible to even get out of bed in the morning with this crap just going on...and on...and on...
It's unbearable.
Thanks for this post. It all seems so heavy and so hopeless, for all the factors you list up there. I just hold onto "can't go around, have to go through." And hope that somehow some good comes, at some point, from this miserable, destructive spiral we're in. But the suffering! Agh!
There should be an Earth for people who don't hate all living things
It's a tossup between Love Will Keep Us Together and this one. Thanks for the memories of 5th grade, Neil Sedaka. #neilsedaka

I keep reminding people that admins hate English departments because they are popular (read: inefficient), not because they aren’t. AI is in a long line of technologies that promise to solve that problem for them.
I cannot agree more, and I am so, so happy you are amplifying this point. Education and efficiency are 100% apples and oranges. And the students I meet in my gen ed teaching are absolutely starved for opportunities to read books and talk about them in community. They know how much it matters.
FUCK FUCK FUCK.
SO MUCH DISINFORMATION on top of the actual, very real violent chaos.
El país seems a bit more on top.
🤬😢
Holding friends and colleagues in Mexico in my heart. Really wish the US crew weren't going about their usual business of carelessly making things worse and more confusing.
UGH...and also an unethical use of student work to train LLMs? I wonder if students can sue?
Yup. A lot changed for me when I began following my local women's football/soccer team.
OK I love this post so much
Alysa Liu telling 60 Minutes “I love struggling, it makes me feel alive” is a legit revolutionary statement from a Bay Area native in a time when copious amounts of time and resources are being put toward convincing us to opt out of experiencing struggle, friction and self-actualization
You know who really has a good vantage on what universities can and should be? Faculty. Not always the organizational structure and operation, because that's not the job, But what it takes to educate? Yep. Yet the overwhelming media coverage is by and about ppl w very little to no experience.
