Immigration detention in Greece is a shady business. In 2024/25, #DetentionLandscapes collaborated with a 3D modelling specialist Boudewyn vD and a team of volunteers to visually recreate 5 immigration detention sites.

We welcome this new policy and appreciate the efforts of the EDPS in proactively addressing this issue. However, BVMN remains concerned that the policy explicitly allows officers to collect material for "promotional" purposes - such as for social media.

Last week, Frontex published a document on its Public Register of Documents which confirms that, nearly three years later, it has adopted a policy prohibiting mobile phone recordings during operations.

Following BVMN’s complaint, the EDPS issued Frontex a set of recommendations to develop and integrate a policy clearly prohibiting such practices, as well as to review procedures relating to investigations conducted by the Frontex DPO.

This complaint followed earlier submissions to Frontex and its Data Protection Office (DPO), which failed to adequately investigate or act upon these allegations.

In 2023, BVMN submitted a complaint to the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), after recording a number of instances in which respondents stated that they were photographed by @frontex.bsky.social officers using personal mobile devices prior to being pushed back.
