This is more of an opinion question, but with all of the rapid ideological changes of the last 150 years, do you think, even in the most wretched or dire of future circumstances, that chattel slavery will return as a legal, codified institution in any major nation or cultural group?

If the banking / financial culture of the late medieval / early modern period just never developed due to stricter church doctrines or other unforeseen changes, would there be any reason for European exploration or presence in the New World? Would the "great divergence" simply disappear?
