I have Long Covid with PEM and POTS, tried low dose nicotine patches a couple of years ago, I could not tolerate them at all, but persevered for a week, then had to give up, and was very relieved to have made that decision. Not for me.

Today is the National Day of Reflection.

The UK "must learn lessons" - not only "to be better prepared for the next pandemic" but to protect vulnerable lives and health now.

Our thoughts are with everyone who suffered and those living with loss. ❤️💛

Ich wünsche wirklich niemandem PEM, aber ich frage mich schon manchmal, wie man solchen Leuten beibringen kann, was PEM bedeutet, außer sie erleben es mal am eigenen Leibe?!

Long Covid groups in the UK- including Long Covid Support, Long Covid SOS, Long Covid Kids, and Long Covid Physio - suggest the government must move from "tokenistic recognition" to a comprehensive national strategy addressing Long Covid as a mass-disabling event. Key Recommendations to the UK
Government:
• Establish a National Strategy: Create a dedicated cross-government taskforce, led by a designated minister, to manage Long Covid as a public health and economic crisis.
• Long-Term Funding & Research: Ringfence
£100m in annual research funding, with a focus on biomedical research, clinical trials, and patient-driven research priorities.

• Fix & Expand Healthcare Services: Reverse the closure of NHS Long Covid clinics, establish Centres of Excellence across the UK, and ensure multidisciplinary care that goes beyond basic rehabilitation.
• Protect Children & Schools: Implement specific, child-centred action, including improved air quality in schools and measures to prevent further infections in educational settings.
• Workplace & Welfare Rights: Formally recognize Long Covid as a disability under the Equality Act 2010 and as an occupational disease for frontline workers, granting access to industrial injuries benefits.
• Public Health & Prevention: Launch public campaigns on the risks of Long Covid and implement public health measures (air cleaning, mask-wearing in healthcare) to reduce ongoing
transmission.

Background and Context
As of early 2025/2026, many specialized Long Covid clinics are closing, with only 46 confirmed to remain open out of over 120, while 24 have closed and 31 are under review. Advocacy groups argue this is leaving the sickest people without care. The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Long Covid continues to urge the Prime Minister to act on these issues to prevent a worsening, long-term societal and economic impact.

Today is the annual Covid-19 #DayOfReflection. 6 years have passed since the start of the pandemic. We reflect today, alongside our community, on the people who lost their lives to Covid-19; the people who still face day-to-day impacts; and on the road ahead.

The service of reflection at St James's University Hospital gave local staff, patients and families a chance to "reflect on the sacrifices made" and recognise the ongoing impact of those living with long Covid.
There are an estimated 1.9 million people in the UK living with long Covid, a condition that has more than 200 symptoms with no cure.
Fran Haddock has had long Covid for three years and said there needs to be more awareness for those "living in this complete limbo".
Haddock, 35, said: "I'm still seeing new people getting long Covid and entering the long Covid community now.
"People are still getting sick long-term, like me with no treatment or cure and not knowing what my future holds."

Progressively Widening Healthcare Costs in Long COVID Over Five Years — Jingya Cheng et al.
"The trajectory showed no inflection point suggesting stabilization, even at 60 months of follow-up. This distinction carries important implications for health system planning, as static cost projections based on short-term estimates will substantially underestimate the true economic burden."

Enough to know that those who write about their recovery publicly are much more likely to credit something they‘ve done for their recovery (often things that others do as well without recovering), rather than entertain the possibility that their body might have recovered anyway, whatever they did.

Mmh, blaming the practitioner or the patient for a technique not working... If somebody has recovered, they’ve done it right, if they haven’t recovered, they’ve done it wrong. Conveniently leaves the belief in the technique as ‚valid‘ intact.

Dr @binitakane.bsky.social explains how a theory that #MECFS is caused by deconditioning and a fear of exercise permeated medicine and framed the illness as psychological. This led to the patients being neglected, gaslit, and some would say abused. Causing huge trauma for the community.

The hallmark symptom, Post-Exertional Malaise (PEM), means even normal activities can trigger a worsening of symptoms. Some of her patients have to choose between a shower or preparing a meal that day.
