It kind of made sense to portray Ford as awkward and klutzy given 1) the mess the White House was in after Nixon resigned, and 2) people didn’t really have a great impression of what Ford’s whole deal was when he became President. He’d only been VP for like a year when Nixon resigned because he was appointed after Spiro Agnew resigned in disgrace. Before becoming VP, Ford was in the House of Representatives. Obviously he wasn’t just some rando off the street, but he wasn’t exactly the most well-known guy in America when he became VP and then 12 months later he became president and was responsible for navigating the office through the aftermath of watergate and the Nixon years. Point is: Ford was actually an athlete, he wasn’t known to physically be clumsy. However, Chase’s performance had an impact on how many people perceived the relative newcomer. The reputation stuck!

This is why I think we need to do top 10 lists at completely random times. Recency bias means end-of-year lists are often skewed to the same months.
I posit that the best way to resolve this is to do the top 10 lists at a different date every year.
