5. The US economyβs dependence on AI may have been overstated, experts say. In 2025: it became conventional wisdom that AI was a major driver of growth. But some prominent economists estimate that it contributed as little as 0% to economic status
Arenβt we lucky that universities havenβt gotten carried away with the hype and taken a careful approach to AI?
Imagine if they had decided to push AI into our teaching and work life!
All praise to our leaders in higher ed for not falling for hype, hallelujah and praise the goddess
Maki goes absolutely nuts in the snow.
In 2024, we founded a new open access, peer reviewed journal. I'll be at the #AIASCS in San Francisco with a stack of #ResDiffJournal postcards, and as submissions editor I'd be happy to chat with anyone looking to submit their work. resdifficiles.com

We βare calling for resistance to the AI industryβs ongoing capture of higher education.β Thanks for this, @sonjadrimmer.bsky.social and Christopher Nygren.

I'm writing an intro & sourcebook on late ancient Gazan literature for Dar al-Kalima University Press. The press and I plan to produce an Arabic translation to make Gazan literature more accessible to Palestinians. Help me compensate the Gazan translator!

Delighted to have a short piece in this week's TLS on Hades 2, gender, and modern myth making.

Infographic titled "AI Isn't a Ticket To an A," explaining how chatbots work, what the data show about the prevalence of these technologies and how they're used, what we know about the quality of their output, and what we know about the impact that frequent use of these technologies has on their users and on content creators, low-wage workers, and the environment.
For their first project, my Kids and Society students have to create an infographic clarifying a common misconception about "kids these days." I'd prefer that they not use AI to create their projects, so I made my own infographic explaining why : )
Might just be a function of where my own brain is at in terms of my training! Looking at some of the other answers, I only really think about Aristotle or the Old Oligarch when I'm forced to ... π¬
The Eumenides maybe?
Teaching a new course this semester focused on Ovidβs Metamorphoses and our first assignment is pondering this marvelous talk by @stephaniemccarter.bsky.social on (the politics of) translating Ovid and how a feminist lens resists contemporary gender and sexual stereotypes.

Thanks for the invitation! It was a delight to work on this.
Now out - open access - in Classical Review. Thanks, @thedancinggrad.bsky.social for taking this one on.
Latest review just dropped! I had the pleasure of reviewing the new English translation of the Valla commentary on Ovid's Metamorphoses, and I unsurprisingly found it the most definitive English-language commentary on the Metamorphoses out there. Check out the review here!

Yes! I find that the AI problems come in my classes with more βtraditionalβ grades versus ones with labor-based or specs grading, which I think is indicative in and of itself β¦
I've had students use it in ways I didn't expect in language classes, like summarizing videos so they don't watch the whole thing (and thus don't understand the vid's point) and generating what was meant to be subjective responses to readings (e.g., "what's the most important thing you learned?")
Decreased public funding for state schools is not a red state vs blue state issue. It isnβt a Trump issue. Itβs symptomatic of a bipartisan disinvestment in higher ed as a foundational public good. Itβs been happening for decades. It doesnβt have to be this way. www.opb.org/article/2024...
2 and 5!
βP.S. Youβre probably thinking of the en dash. That whore has always been suspicious.β
