no matter how dry and extensive and clinical a paper is, no paper can truly capture everything about an event. What information is being highlighted? What themes are being hammered? What is being hidden?

fun thing on why reading nonfiction and study papers can also improve your fiction reading is that while you're reading a scientific study or a first hand account, something I'm always thinking of is what are the biases of the writer and why they're writing it

a drawn apple will at the end of day, always represent an apple, but the difference between an apple and une pomme can literally be oceans apart, which is why critically reading is so so so important because we all have to share and agree on the mass hallucination that is the written word

it's like a visual artist studying references. other people's writings are your references, especially those that have underwent serious editing and peer review. writing is v unique in this regard imo, because while it is possible to study and write from real life study, it's not the most effective-

reading is a point that's been said a lot, but it really is important, and if anyone wants to write better they need to not only read, but also to be critical and know how to study while reading.

if possible and if adhd allows, i always try to read things twice. once for pleasure, once for study

Read. Single best thing you can do. All other writing advice is just highly subjective window dressing. But if you want to get better at writing, you need to read. Read a variety of genres and authors, read nonfiction, just fucking read.
