Donkey Kong 64 contains an extremely bizarre unused animation of Donkey Kong floating awkwardly in mid-air. The demo version reveals what the animation was meant to look like, with him undulating wildly during it, which is equally bizarre and unexplained.

In New Super Mario Bros., Mario cannot use a Mega Mushroom in Toad Houses. Assuming the Mega Mario form in these locations reveals that the special Question Blocks cannot be destroyed by it, and instead create a very peculiar infinite particle effect.

In Paper Mario: The Origami King, Koopa Troopas are shown to be explicitly religious, using words like "worship" to describe their activity and "god" to describe the object of that worship. This is distinct from usual Mario spirituality that revolves around "wishes". It it possible that this is harkening back to a single dedicated sprite of a Koopa Troopa praying to Statue Mario in the ending of Super Mario Bros. 3, 32 years prior. As modern Paper Mario games often reference that game, this could be a deliberate reference. In Paper Mario: The Origami King, Koopa Troopas are explicitly religious, which is very rare for the Mario franchise. This might be a reference to an idea first proposed by Super Mario Bros. 3 32 years prior, whereby a Koopa Troopa was shown praying in the game's ending.

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Donkey Kong is not playable. However, an unfinished version of him exists in the files, which uses Waluigi as his icon. It is possible that this provisional Donkey Kong could have been a modified Waluigi.
