What happens when landfill meets the sea?
Billy looks at how erosion is exposing a #coastal #landfill site, releasing hazardous materials into the #marine environment. Heโs developing new methods to track how these materials move along the coast. @qmul.bsky.social

River plastic emissions to the worldโs oceans - Nature Communications
Rivers provide a major pathway for ocean plastic waste, but effective mitigation is dependent on a quantification of active sources. Here, the authors present a global model of riverine plastic inputs...
Lebreton's classic 2017 paper โRiver #plastic emissions to the worldโs oceansโ shows a snapshot of how bad the problem already was... now nearly 10 years ago!
Have we met this challenge, or has #river #pollution become worse?

Flyer for the Anthropocene Sediment Network Conference, dated 18th June 2025, with the ASN logo at the top. The flyer text highlights how todayโs sediment routes through infrastructures, economies, and legislation, entangled with social, political, and ecological forces. It frames the ASN as a network exploring these dynamics through open, interdisciplinary dialogue. Stylised city and industrial skyline graphics appear at the bottom of the flyer.

Cylindrical glass beads in bright shades of blue and turquoise with white horizontal stripes
Photo: Archรคologisches Landesmuseum Baden-Wรผrttemberg
Glass beads were a luxury product in Bronze Age central Europe. These 3,000 year-old beads were found in the pile-dwelling settlements of Sipplingen and Hagnau-Burg at Lake Constance. They were probably made in the Alpine foothills from raw glass imported from Italy.

Love the story of how Blue John got its nameโฆ they used amber to extract it, turning the edges of some blocks yellow & the mineral itself is blue. When trading it to France, it was called bleu jaune (blue yellow) stone, and the name returned to the mines in a more native sounding โBlue Johnโ. ๐ชจ

A box model diagram, showing a 3D "wedge" of landscape. On the model, each talk is represented. There is a city and a lignite mine in the background, with some horses on the far mountain. The meandering river is dammed, and has sandmining, subsidence, and anthropogenic alteration along the beach. A spit and lagoon, island, and reef represent the other fascinating coastal talks. In the foreground is a deep sea corer, and to the right of the image are mined tunnels and some surface spoil heaps. Each feature is labelled with the time at which the equivalent talk occurs, details of which may be found in the programme.

Ocean footage of bottom-trawling depicts "ecological vandalism" - Oceanographic
Heartbreaking footage of bottom-trawling features in new cinema release, Ocean with David Attenborough to open the world's eyes to its horrors
Bottom trawling devours vast numbers of sea creatures, many not killed for food but as bycatch. At the same time it scours the seabed, destroying the habitat young sea life needs to grow - leading to generational decline in population & biodiversity.
