Are you going to make business and landlords clear the sidewalks in front of their buildings?
Are you going to make business and landlords clear the sidewalks in front of their buildings?
Also, super annoying that she only tells us after the storm that owners are responsible for the alleys, when the district has always done it. If we had known of this sudden change we could have shoveled our alley during the storm like we did with our sidewalks.
It is wild the mayor is exempting businesses (including presumably landlords) from clearing sidewalks. If owners aren't required to clear sidewalks, who will? Is the mayor going to deploy shovelers in addition to the plows for those of us who walk and don't drive?
EMERGENCY FUNDING REQUEST: We have a $15,500 funding gap and roughly 24 hours to fill it. Our caller has an appointment scheduled for Wednesday, giving us until EOD Tuesday to close the gap.
Help us close the gap, here: secure.everyaction.com/aJJmFWffI0qB...
All the DC elected posts about how DC residents made it through the last year by coming together are nice, and true to some extent. But I just think of all my immigrants friends and neighbors who had to flee the District. They didn't "make it" and the District is worse now that they are gone.
Does anyone but the people who stand to make money actually want driverless cars?
On Monday, ICE agents violently restrained a woman in Minneapolis, dragging her in the snow and pinning her face down as onlookers shouted the woman was pregnant.
In response, one agent fired a taser into the crowd. “Who wants more?” he taunted, according to a WCCO reporter. trib.al/vdWc3qj
No need to delay: Not only did the Board of Elections clearly state that they are ready and capable of implementing ranked choice voting, but the voters already told us how they "assessed the need" by overwhelmingly passing it at the ballot box.
A councilmember who won his primary last year with 23.7% of the vote wants to delay implementing ranked choice voting. The at-large CM who won her last primary with 35.9% agrees that making her run for reelection next year under RCV would be a bad idea.
Totally get this. I think I find it annoying bc she's from the party that's always accusing poor people of mooching off the government.
Elon Musk donated $277 million to Trump so he could steal the federal government’s data, dismantle the nation’s infrastructure, and stop foreign aid from going to nonwhite people. It’s a quid pro quo breathtaking in scope, corruption, and damage, & completely unprecedented in American history.
SNAP news: Bowser says she'll use about $30 mil in contingency funds to ensure SNAP/WIC recipients get paid in November. She did something similar in the last long shutdown. Just yesterday she said she was waiting on the AG's lawsuit!
If this Council was serious about change, we would be fighting for what people actually need. Stronger rent control. Fully funded vouchers. More deeply affordable housing.
But instead, we’re chipping away at some of the few protections that tenants actually have.
The constant lamenting about having to be the grown up in the room and do hard things was so patronizing today. If you can't figure out a way to build affordable housing without evicting tenants and stripping them of their rights, get out of here.
The rest of the council should be truly ashamed of themselves.
Making it easier to evict people at a time the feds are quite literally criminalizing homelessness in the District.
The council just legislated a giant hole through topa on 24 hours notice. Truly shameful stuff.
In a shocking on-air moment, a “Fox and Friends” co-host said homeless people suffering from mental health issues who refuse help should be killed
13/Initial data is in. DC occupation = sudden stop to economy. Foot traffic, bike share usage, hotels all see fall. Some up to 20%. Mass scale deterrence scares people from engaging in daily life. Businesses and economy take the hit.

If the DC Council passes the RENTAL Act now, it will all but ensure that more of our immigrant neighbors and neighbors experiencing homelessness are terrorized and detained by the federal occupying forces. www.legalaiddc.org/blogs/DC-fed...

Today's Supreme Court ruling profoundly impacts the foundation of American democracy. The implications are severe. Our constitutional safeguards are no longer guaranteed. The enjoyment of constitutional rights and protections are now contingent upon one's race and class.
People from all over are showing up for DC. This is not a moment. It’s a movement. We are united in our demands. We are all DC! #FreeDC
To Chicago comrades & anyone else facing possible federal occupation:
The National Guard is standing around for photo ops.
DHS, ICE, FBI, DEA, ATF, are working with local police to terrorize & kidnap our neighbors.
Organize accordingly.
Poltergeist? Am I took old? Lol.
Proud to say that I am the President Elect of the Washington Teachers Union AFT Local#6 alongside my entire Educators Taking Action slate. I am proud of the campaign we ran and the work we are gearing up to do. ✊
So proud of my friend Laura and excited to see the powerful union she's going to build with her siblings. ✊ She cares so deeply about teachers, students and the future of DC schools.
Brad Bondi is on LinkedIn saying that the threat to the legal profession is his losing the election for DC bar president, not the lawlessness with which is his sister and the current admin are wielding their power. Anyway, fuck that guy and I hope he continues to sorely lose.
as far as i can tell, the high rents for commercial real estate are a real hinderance to the sustainability of restaurants and other businesses in charlottesville
Oh my I missed that the vote happened today. What a nightmare.
