indeed. I was a primary teacher before the shambolic National Curriculum, it was great. Then we were crushed by attainment targets and levels, and a curriculum that needed 120% of available time. From Kenneth Baker, a man who didn’t know that primary ended at 11. Unlike private schools. True.

Children love to be read to. One of the most underrated activities in school is the teacher reading to the class. Voicing the characters, building drama, and of course closing the book and saying we will continue tomorrow. It models reading for pleasure and makes kids want to read.

Children need to see a value in reading. A “return” on their effort invested. Pleasure is the biggest dividend reading delivers.

The National Literarcy Strategy had many good ideas in it. However, the rigid time frame and the proscriptive delivery style meant that a lot of the joy of reading and writing was lost. Add in Gove‘s ignorant meddling, and we have narrow formulaic reading and writing.

Anyone with a soul who has witnessed young children chanting ”phonemes” in a group, pointing to each sound with a lolly ice stick as they go, will attest to the mind numbing boredom exuded by the participants - including the adult leading the chanting
