Sorry I’m an American expat. Not been back in the US for 13(?) years, but trump’s presidency, the fact he can hold just batshit crazy press conferences like this is an indictment on US intelligence, education, and the press.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”
That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.
I remember an interview with one organizer where he said they only asked for volunteers who would not react. He said those who wouldn’t be able to sit and not react could contribute in other areas. Just amazing to me the amount of discipline shown by those protesters.
I think it’s important to note that nonviolence is not nonaction. I’m still in awe of the people who did lunch counter protests. They sat peacefully while people were violent against them.
