“Who could’ve seen this coming?” is highly unpleasant when the answer is “most people who know anything about this big topic and they’ve been saying so for years.”
It's so bad that we've reached a point where members of Congress casually discuss stripping citizenship from and deporting people because they don't like their views.
By analyzing records obtained by @deportationdata.org, I found that the total number of people who have experienced ICE detention in the first 9 months of the Trump admin amounts to the population of a mid-sized city.
ICE detention remains almost completely opaque to the public. So this is essential reporting. @mattshuham.bsky.social and @jessicaschulberg.bsky.social spoke with a man who got paroled out of CA state corrections but was then sent straight to California City.

Someone needs to walk up to these bigots and say, "I don't care how much you hate this particular group--they are getting the same civil rights as you and you'll just have to suck it up because this is how democracy works."
Also, I hate the phrase "median voter." Because people aren't actually talking about centrists when they use it. They are talking about transphobes. Or racists. Etc. They are talking about how to appeal to bigots. And maybe we should stop trying?
Also, I'm cis and civil rights are still my numero uno concern, baby. Yes, over taxes. Yes, over health insurance. Yes, over the Epstein files. Because without civil rights? We won't have a democracy for long.
Also, this is disappointing coming from Piker. He should know how irritating it is to have one's primary cause dismissed because it is believed to impact only a small number of people. I don't care how small the number is. They're still Americans, right? What are we doing here?
