Pain Measurement Scale Ranging in numbers from 0-10, incrementing by 1. Each number is assigned a smiley face and a descriptive word. As you move from right to left, the faces get more distressed and distraught, indicating increasing amounts of pain. The associated words, in order, starting at 0 are ‘No Pain’, ‘Minimal’, ‘Mild’, ‘Uncomfortable’, ‘Tolerable’, ‘Distracting’ (at the midway point), ‘Distressing’, ‘Unmanageable’, ‘Intense’, ‘Unbearable’, ‘Unable to Move’ (for number 10). You might use this type of chart in reference to when a doctor or nurse asks you to rate your level of pain on a scar from one to ten.

If you need a scale, I like the descriptive words, not really the numbers. But I am more comfortable understanding the word + number relationships to other descriptors listed here as well. (I have also just taken this out and shown providers… ya know, for those with less whimsy).

Can you do what you need to do? How about what you want to do? Can you manage your pain with your current resources? Does your pain affect your relationships? (Asking others if they’ve noticed a change in personality/behavior). How good or bad is the life you’re living and how could life improve?

I talk about most things based on its impact on QOL (quality of life). I have lots of pain and it’s far more normalized. But you know what gets me? Small shit like uncontrolled sweating, inability to regulate body temperature. How good or bad is your QOL? How is your everyday functioning?

The other day, mom said, “you don’t need to start the conversation by saying “I hate talking about this; it’s so subjective””. Said it wasn’t the most productive use of the time together. Then maybe don’t ask me such a silly question? (And proceed to insist I provide a number)

Near Cleveland (not CLE proper), you need a civil engineering study to put in a stop sign (in a residential neighborhood that has stop signs every other cross street). The most they could muster without the study was a small “cross traffic does not stop” sign.

I’m not tooo terribly far behind you but do they define what a “problem” actually is/is it open to interpretation (eg, having trouble bending down to get the toilet paper? Inability to rip sheets from the roll? Going from sitting to standing or standing to sitting? Ability to consistently bear down?
