thanks for checking back in and allowing me to clarify I appreciate it
the institution only felt comfortable assigning a female-led book so long as the female character wasn't feminine. They are choosing stories in ways to "protect" boys from having to engage with femininity, as if it is beneath them, demeaning to them.
I understand your point and let me clarify--she felt hurt that there was only one single female MC and the fact that the only one was masculine presenting implied that femininity was unacceptable. Scout in and of herself is not the problem. Masculine presenting girls are not the problem. It's that
Thank you. It truly means so much to hear this. π
My daughter complained that Scout was masculine presenting anyway so it barely counted, but at least a female author I guess!
It would be adding insult to injury if the only female-led book was written by a man! My other kids are still assigned SL in high school though.
good guess, but no
ding ding ding!
Good guess. Nope, but she read that on her own.
For decades I've spoken about how we prioritize men's stories and communicate that girls can read everything but boys should only read about male main characters. People always ask me, it's better now tho, isn't it?
My 15yo has been assigned 9 books in 7-9th grade. Only 1 female MC. (guess the book)
Dream Big cover shows elementary age Cassie posing with a big smile and sunglasses in a spotlight. Four other kids smile or frown in the background, including a boy with a movie clapper
On Goodreads there's a giveaway for an ARC of DREAM BIG, the sequel to my graphic novel DREAM ON (art by Marcela Cespedes)

bookstores are getting increasingly conservative in their actual book buying numbers, so 1000% preorder that book you're excited about please. Every single copy helps.
Copy editors are such gems. There should be a Copy Editors Day. Cake would be mandatory.

blue graphic with an outline of the United States. Red and white text reads: Call. National Book Banning Bill Proposed in US House of Reps. Tell your rep: Vote no on H.R. 7661.
We've had a day to pull a few things together, so here's a thread some more targeted info opposing the potential national book ban just proposed in the House of Representatives.
Quick question does anyone know how to restore virtue to a decaying society
Iβve seen enough. Not about the election. Just generally.
Book banners are trying to create a world in which no one is able to imagine living lives different from their own
We need NYC-based authors/writers to use their skills to share the importance of public libraries in the 21st century. If this is you, write things and post them to all of your networks.

It's you I like,
It's not the things you wear,
It's not the way you do your hair
But it's you I like
The way you are right now,
The way down deep inside you
Not the things that hide you,
Not your toys
They're just beside you.
But it's you I like
I was born in an Iranian prison. My parents were held in their jails. My uncles lie in their mass graves. Nothing you can tell me about the crimes of the Iranian regime that I haven't lived in blood and bone. That doesn't mean I want my people bombed, maimed, killed, their homes in ruins. If your vision of liberation comes only through the destruction of innocent lives, then it's not freedom you're after. Sahar Delijani, Iranian author
I am pro Iranian people. I stand with them against their own governmentβs repression AND against the imperial violence in the form of bombs dropped from the sky from Israel & the US who have already killed hundreds.
I support neither imperialism or dictatorship.
Sahar Delijani said it best:
Picture of Marjane Satrapi alongside a quote from her. The quote reads: The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same... - Marjane Satrapi, Iranian-French graphic novelist
Thinking about this quote from Persepolis creator Marjane Satrapi again.
A screenshot of Rachel Dratch from SNL. She's a white woman with short dark hair and blue eyes, and she's making an awkward expression that implies, "Sorry I have to tell you this and ruin your good time. But also I'm kind of not sorry about it." I've added a subtitle that reads, "That's AI."
an updated debbie downer sketch but it's friends showing her funny videos and she has to respond like this to every single one like this:

Never heard of this law before right this second but holy fuck if it does not 100% check out
It's awful and I'm so sorry
