This Hubble Telescope false color image shows a cluster of hundreds of brilliant blue-white stars, surrounded by hot, glowing orange and brown clouds, resembling fluffy puffs. It is a detailed view of the star-forming region R136, in the 30 Doradus Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud, 170,000 light-years from Earth. The stars, some over 100 times more massive than the Sun, emit ultraviolet light and stellar winds that sculpt the surrounding gas, creating a fantastic landscape of pillars, ridges, and valleys. At the center, a dark area resembles the outline of a Christmas tree. The predominant colors are the blue of the hottest stars, the green of oxygen, and the red of fluorescent hydrogen. The image, taken in October 2009, spans about 100 light-years.
