Last year I worked as a fact-checker on the Real Vikings podcast (Noiser), narrated by Iain Glen.

The first episode is now free, exploring the Viking Age from Ragnar LoΓ°brok and Harald Hardrada to the wider Norse diaspora from Constantinople to Vinland.

β€˜The state of the world is at the present day constantly changing’

I feel like this could have been written this morning, but it’s a β€˜Song on the Times’ of thirteenth-century England, during the reign of Henry III

Perhaps some things just really don’t change….

I wouldn’t be here without my foundation year. It opened up my world to a career in HE. Essex UCU is fighting for the soul of our sector, and we should give them our unequivocal support.

I taught a class on β€œhope” last year and the few theorists who’ve written on it all point out that hope is the harder choice - that despair is easy and too often fashionable

I'm not often proud of Britain but I do love our illogical (to everyone else) mish-mash of imperial and metric measurements

Reflecting on how, post-viva, my reaction to others' good news has been increasingly (and uncharacteristically) resentful.

So to all those I know, even those I'm no longer close with: I see and hear of your successes, and I'll celebrate them. It's bloody hard out there ❀️

A very wet and foggy Bowes castle today.

The stone castle that remains was begun under Henry II in the early 1170s to replace a timber castle built in the site of the former Roman fort of Lavatris. Its hall-keep design and planned village were fairly unusual in England.
