The Writer's Practice: Building Confidence in Your Nonfiction Writing

It's mostly a rewritten Chapter 2 to reflect subsequent information and events. That plus some discussion stuff in the back that I think is sort of fun. If you're looking for more inspiration for APUSH writing I've got some history/analytical stuff in this book: www.amazon.com/Writers-Prac...

Who makes those comments? What even is "artisanal" writing? I write a lot about writing and teaching writing and I've never heard of or used the term. An argument produced by AI has no meaning until it is assessed by a human as the AI lacks intention, so at some point, it must reflect human judgment

What is the link between not using AI for writing and self-actualization? I don't understand the connection.

I would rather have a school that wants students to fail at analyzing a primary source than one that wants them to rely on AI to give them the right information.

I might've appreciated something like this at the very beginning because I literally had no training (as a TA), but eventually, you have to be free to teach, if you know what I'm saying.

I've seen some of the evangelicals, but there's plenty of room for them to do their thing if it's principled and consistent with deeper values while declaring a pro-human orientation At least it seems possible.

I say this at just about every presentation I give on the issue and the places that invite me seem open to it (self-selecting group), but administrations are cautious, maybe to a fault in this case.

Interesting. A kind of factory for scripted lessons, I guess. I can't imagine teaching under that kind of guidance. What was it like?

Who is it that gets paid to write up this stuff? I can't imagine how dull it is. Do they just have LLMs do it now?

"BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that we affirm the rights of students and teachers to refuse to sign up for, prompt, or otherwise use generative AI in the writing classroom."
College writing teachers have spoken, y'all.
The CCCC resolution affirming students' and teachers' right to refuse generative AI in the writing classroom passed by an overwhelming majority at the #4C26 Annual Business Meeting this past Friday, March 6.
Link to the full resolution below.

Someone disagreed with my claim AI will add to pointless busywork work and their counterpoint was in job apps people use AI to write cover letters and companies use AI to read them and "AI can do the first round of interviews."
How is a round of AI interviews not a big waste of applicants' time??

3 questions that appear the end of my article for Edutopia on AI concerns with teachers
We are certainly at a crossroads around AI in education (and likely will be for some time) but I continue to think the focus needs to be centered on the choices ADULTS are making, not the students
Three questions I think are worth asking any educator using AI in their work right now:

It's true that Jordan had no primary antagonist throughout his career, but I think there's something to be said for the way he vanquished his forebears one at a time - Thomas, Bird, Magic - and then brushed off others like Drexler, Barkley, Stockton/Malone with relative ease. Dominance.

Would insisting in class that Michael Jordan (not LeBron James) is the greatest basketball player of all-time run afoul of a new university system policy in Texas?
Maybe! Which shows the true nature of initiating a policy like this.

UT System Gives Itself a Catchall Threat to Faculty
What the heck does this even mean?
I reflect on a past class discussion that would have run afoul of a new University of Texas System policy prohibiting discussions on "controversies not germane to the course." www.insidehighered.com/opinion/colu...

UT System Gives Itself a Catchall Threat to Faculty
What the heck does this even mean?
Very enjoyable article by @biblioracle.bsky.social shows how great it is to engage a college class in a fun discussion that might not be exactly on point. Faculty in states like Texas now have to be afraid to teach like this.

With immense sadness, the writers of ACRLog acknowledge the passing of Fobazi Ettarh, library worker and influential LIS scholar. If you are able to contribute, there is a GoFundMe established for Fob...
My colleagues at ACRLog wrote short tributes to the life and work of Fobazi Ettarh @fobettarh.bsky.social. I wrote about her work on disability, which I think deserves more recognition. acrlog.org/2026/03/04/t...

Can AI Replace Social Science Researchers?
No. No it can't. Come on, now.
Fantastic work from @davekarpf.bsky.social putting some perspective on the notion that AI can do social science research. It can generate passable journal articles, which is not necessarily the same thing. It's a chance to consider what we should be valuing. davekarpf.beehiiv.com/p/can-ai-rep...

Yep. I use the nearly identical Campbell's Law because he studied education, but same thing. By the time students get to college they've become so good at hitting the target they've hindered their capacity to progress as writers.

If I ignored the profession part, I would probably spend more time writing short stories/novels because that's pleasurable, but at the same time, if I ignored the experience part, I would not have managed to find a pleasing intersection between writing I find stimulating and making $'s.
