Clubs to play up to SIX practice games in major pre-season shake-up An expanded pre-season schedule has been pitched to clubs as an opportunity to assist the development of players who may not play during the season

Call me crazy, but 6 practice games plus 12 regular season games equals 18 games... so, why not just have one practice game and 17 regular season games so every team plays each other once?! #AFLW

Sutton’s “happy tears” on draft night FOOTBALL AFLW EXPORTS BY BLAKE METCALF-HOLT   GIPPSLAND extended its top league football representatives at last week’s AFLW Draft. A total of three Gippsland Power players were scooped up, while a Latrobe Valley legacy name was added under father-daughter. Traralgon’s Chelsea Sutton was the first to be picked on Monday, December 15, taken at Pick 32 by St Kilda. Sutton was delivered the news like everyone else, watching the draft proceedings from the comfort of her home alongside family and friends. “When my name got called out, I was pretty relieved but I was quite emotional (and) cried a little bit … it was happy tears,” she told the Express. “I’d had a few interviews with different clubs, obviously I didn’t know where I was going on the night, I didn’t know if I was going to go at all because anything can happen on draft night. “I was super happy to get my name called out and I can’t wait to get started at St Kilda and get down and into preseason.” Sutton played four seasons at Power, with 2025 being her breakout year, winning Gippsland’s best-and-fairest and earning her first selection to Victoria Country at the AFL National Championships. The speedy mid-forward said that the last 12 months have been a real “awakening” in pursuing a professional football career. “I unlocked a whole new motivation, knowing this year was the biggest year yet and how hard I had to work for those dreams to come true,” Sutton said. “I had a new look on everything and when I made Vic Country, I was like ‘if I keep going the way I am, I could have a real chance here.’ “So, ticking off the small boxes and goals I had (made) for myself and slowly ticking them off throughout the year (and) I began to get more and more confident.” Sutton joins fellow Traralgon export Darcy Guttridge and Power teammate Abby Hobson (from Koo Wee Rup), who was taken by the Saints 10 picks later. Wonthaggi’s Baia Pugh was drafted at Pick 54 to Richmond. Lastly, Maya Dear, daughter of the late Churchill legend Paul Dear, was picked up by Hawthorn as the club’s first-ever father-daughter selection in its history. As a more mature aged player taken as a 21-year-old, Dear comes from a predominant basketball and netball background, where she most recently was playing NBL1 for Sandringham Sabres. Dear joins brother Calsher, carrying on their father’s name in the brown and gold, with the son having already played 26 games for the Hawks in the last two seasons. It was recently announced that Calsher would be donning Paul’s number 13 going forward, having previously worn 35 on his back.

Magpie army invades Morwell FOOTBALL BY BLAKE METCALF-HOLT   HUNDREDS of young football lovers made their way to Morwell Recreation Reserve for an afternoon with the game’s best. Collingwood took over the Latrobe Valley last week, beginning with a super clinic and signing session, followed by a plethora of school visits. A majority of the Magpies squad made their way down last Wednesday (December 10), initially giving some neat tips and tricks to the young footballers that took the field. Following on from that, a sprawling black and white crowd piled along the fence line to grab a photo and sign some memorabilia. The 2023 premiers feature a number of local exports on its list, including Sale’s Scott Pendlebury, Morwell’s Tew Jiath, and Traralgon’s Tim Membrey. Local hero: Traralgon’s own Tim Membrey alongside fans Blainey and Brenda. The latter took time to chat to the Express about being back home and getting a chance to mingle with the kids, just as he once did. “It’s great, I remember clearly coming to these sort of things as a young fella and running around, having a kick and meeting some of my heroes growing up,” Membrey said. “To be able to come back and give back to the community and get some smiles on the kids’ faces, it’s certainly something I enjoy doing.” After 10 seasons with St Kilda, Membrey made the move to Collingwood to begin last season, in which he reached the preliminary final with the Magpies – the deepest he’d ever been in his career. “It was obviously an incredible year,” he said. “We didn’t quite get to the big dance, but we certainly learnt a lot throughout the season and played some really strong footy.” Highflyer: Jeremy Howe together with Isaac and another young Pies fanatic. He added that the group has “hit the ground running” for preseason, and predicts the Pies to be right back up there in contention for the flag next year. Membrey was once Glengarry Football-Netball Club’s number one ticket holder, and before becoming Gippsland Power captain, was dominating for the Maroons in the Gippsland League. Currently with property in the Traralgon area, Membrey noted he still gets down to a few local games during the year to soak in that community football feel. “I try to get down and look over that as much as I can. I’ve got a lot of close friends and relatives that play in the local leagues, so I do like to keep an eye on how things are going,” he said. Simply the best: A young fan gets up close with Nick Daicos. Collingwood made use of their time down in the Latrobe Valley, as a number of Magpies were spotted courtside at the Wednesday night NBL showcase between South East Melbourne Phoenix and Tasmania JackJumpers. Despite being near the end of the year, the AFL was still front of mind for locals as St Kilda also arrived to Leongatha last Monday and Tuesday (December 8 and 9) for an equally jam-packed extended stay. The Parrots’ own Dyson Heppell was also in the news in the last week as it was announced he would be joining Collingwood as a development coach for the upcoming season. The former Essendon captain did time for VFL club Port Melbourne as a playing-coach this year, while also spectacularly returning to his home club to don the green and gold. Heppell played six games for Leongatha in 2025, including winning duel best-on-ground awards in the Parrots dominating Grand Final win over Traralgon. Additionally, in the women’s competition, Traralgon’s Lily-Rose Williamson has been traded from the Magpies to Brisbane in the lead-up to the AFLW Draft. Williamson, along with Pick 17 and a future second-round selection, moved to the Lions in exchange for Pick 15, 29 and 47. Black and white: Billy Frampton and Bobby Hill flank the Magpie army. Photographs: Blake Metcalf-Holt The Traralgon local was added to Collingwood’s list a week out of Round 1 as a replacement player for Mattea Breed. Williamson had previously played eight AFLW games for Essendon and featured in the VFLW state team. Williamson played 11 matches in 2025, where the Magpies improved from a wooden spoon in 2024. The AFLW Draft took place last Monday.

If anything, our winger unit seems well stocked so maybe O'Connor Moreira could make a case for early selection by becoming a small forward type? You're really just hoping for somebody who can play a role and give you some energy at this stage of the draft. 36 goals in 17 games as a 15-yr old. #aflw

O'Connor Moreira arrives as somebody the Dogs would have had eyes on since she was playing in a part of their zone. Looks to have dominate junior stats but didn't make Vic Metro. I like the lateral movement in the videos & a left foot is nice. Seems a few preseasons away body wise. #aflw
