El Guincho's album "Pop Negro" has been the closest thing to a musical obsession I've had in A While, since a few weeks ago when @belarius shared the **(NSFW)** music video for "Bombay" in a context where the specific sort of coherence and intentionality to its collage of disparate scenes was relevant. despite the poor quality of my mono phone speaker, the song grRR*AB*Bed my hands and mashed them on my keyboard in a way that made the album accessible on a device that good headphones are attached to. immediate goosebumps upon listening to "Bombay" properly, and whatever the expectations it set for the rest of the album were, it all lived up to 'em! there are harmonies and textures and motions of musical energy throughout that conjure bright, warm feelings of Life in me, anchored to catchy and in some instances surprisingly novel rhythms and song structures, satisfyingly varied without anything sounding out-of-place. it's a fairly short listen (sadly)... nine tracks, a little over half an hour. more than half of the individual tracks are ones I want to highlight as A Favorite for one reason or another, my enjoyment of the rest not terribly far behind. I haven't gone out of my way to listen to a lot of Latin music otherwise, so maybe it's just too big of a blind spot on my part, but I've gathered this album fits into a rather unique stylistic niche, question mark? I'd love recs if anyone would take a stab at making matches with its Particular Undefined Something. it is unfortunately singular even in El Guincho's own discography. I listened to most of that this morning, and didn't really care much for his earlier works at all, and though his next album Hiperasia is also Excellent, it's a *significant* departure into wild glitch pop, and not so much its own thing — someone on rateyourmusic likened it to Machinedrum, which got me hyped for it, and upon listening I was again immediately on board with ~the entire album start to finish! HAHA TRUNCATED BLUESKY SUCKS STOMA
