Why climate-resilient farming must become a priority for marginal farmers The most significant change in the history of Indian agriculture is taking place. This change is being driven by technology and is changing the face of Indian agriculture. Since the agricultural sector supports almost half the population of India, the impact of the climate crisis has become a development crisis. Currently, more than 85 per cent of India’s farming population is categorised as either small or marginal farmers with less than two hectares of land. These marginal farmers’ lives are at risk of being affected by the consequences of rainfall variability, rising temperature levels, groundwater depletion, and the rising costs of cultivation. For the rural population of India, no longer is the variability of the climate just a mere concept; it is reality. Why climate resilience is now non-negotiable The unpredictable rainfall patterns and rising temperature levels are not only interfering with traditional planting times but are also resulting in reduced crop yields of water-intensive crops.
