The entire Big Island was put under a flash flood warning shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday, March 14, as heavy rains continued to fall. Hawaiʻi County officials say residents should continue to avoid all unnecessary travel because of significant risks of flash flooding and strong, locally damaging winds. The storm produced heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts Saturday throughout large areas of Hawaiʻi Island, as well as flash floods that closed multiple sections of Highway 11 in Kaʻū. causing the county to urge residents in those areas to shelter in place. Some areas in Kaʻū received 10 to 15 inches of rain in 24 hours. Moderate to heavy rainfall was expected to remain in place over Kaʻū through Saturday evening, leading to significant flash flooding. Widespread flooding, damage underway as storm batters Maui County MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui County officials say the island remains in the middle of a powerful Kona storm bringing widespread flooding, road closures and damage across the county, including Molokai and Lanai. According to the National Weather Service, some areas have received more than 20 inches of rain, including Kula, and wind gusts over 70 mph were recorded in Kaunakakai. Severe weather is expected to continue through Sunday. Major roadways inundated Maui County Civil Defense Administrator Kono Davis said heavy rain and flooding have affected major roadways across Maui County. “Over the past day and a half, Maui has been experiencing a lot of rain and wind inundation across the entire county, including Molokai and Lanai,” Davis said. “A lot of the major thoroughfares or critical infrastructure roadways have been inundated or blocked.” Officials said flooding, landslides, sinkholes and downed power lines have forced widespread road closures. Emergency crews conducted floodwater rescues overnight in South Maui, and officials said dozens of people were cut off in Hana due to road washouts. Google uses Gemini AI to map 2.6 million floods from news archives Google researchers used the Gemini large language model to analyze 5 million news articles and create a geo-tagged dataset of 2.6 million floods. This development addresses a significant gap in weather forecasting, as flash floods are difficult to predict due to their short-lived and localized nature. The resulting dataset, named Groundsource, provides a baseline for training machine learning models in regions lacking extensive meteorological infrastructure. Researchers used Groundsource to train a Long Short-Term Memory neural network to generate flash flood probabilities from global weather forecasts. The model now highlights risks for urban areas in 150 countries on the Flood Hub platform and shares data with emergency response agencies.
