Harbingers of spring - My 1st Sand Martins of the year this morning at Bowling Green Marsh made me smile. #FootIt

Also 1 Spotted Redshank and 4 Spoonbills. The Sand Martins were too distant & fast for a photo, so here’s a short Spoonbill video instead.

A long run up into the Haldon foothills this afternoon, following quiet Devon lanes. T-shirt & shorts weather.

Singing Cirl Bunting was my first for 2026 #FootIt. Three Firecrests in the Holly understorey. Kept a look out for Cattle Egrets but none seen.

25km 🏃🏻 with 360m elevation.

Four Spoonbills on Bowling Green Marsh Topsham

I continue to track the number of bird species I’ve seen or heard while out on foot from home.

Rather predictably February slowed right up. Two additions, Fieldfare & Spoonbill, take me to 109.

Feb attempts for Dipper, Dartford Warbler & Goshawk failed

Crisp packet plog - 10km run from home up and over to Ludwell Valley picking up crisp packets as I went.

Blue sky & spring flowers.

Followed up run with walk around town. 3 Spoonbills on BG Marsh, my 1st for the year and only my 2nd #FootIt addition for February.

Finally added to my #FootIt list with Fieldfare this morning 👍🏻

A 10km run from the front door. Running along a road, I noticed a distant thrush with a grey rump fly into a hedge. Stopping I could hear the chatter of Fieldfares.

My 1st of the year, despite walking & running around 100s of miles of Devon countryside.

And my 1st #FootIt addition post January.

Damn! I hope you recover quickly.

42k and no new #FootIt additions for the year. Darties refused to call and sea devoid of new species (no Kittiwake or Fulmar).

Yesterday’s walk up the Allanwater added wigeon and lapwing to my self-powered list for the year; I had missed both on #footit in January. List now up to 92.

Running in Squares (OS Map Squares!) Martin set himself a challenge to run through the 400 1 km squares in a 1:25.000 OS map centered on his home in Topsham, Devon...

4/4 In the pod I touched on my local adventures, exploring the OS map centred on my home. Lots of #FootIt birding and running.

Grab a map and find new footpaths (I’ve been along every single public footpath on my map). New places to bird & run.

I carry my 8.5 x 42 bins in my running pack if I’ve got birding in mind (especially for #FootIt). Put them in a small dry bag.

Don’t bother for all runs though.

Featuring the running, birding el Coati, inspiring Jonnies to get in training for an ultra running #FootIt in 2027.

Run bird repeat.

A 7 mile walk to Brandon Marsh nature reserve on Thursday gave me 9 new species for #footit. Final total is 74 species.

I completed different type of #FootIt challenge in 2024 - running through all 400 1km squares in an OS map centred on my home, starting and ending each run from the front door.

Great way of finding new birding locations.

And here is my #FootIt list. Just five bird species redacted (seen in Devon but entailed the use of a car 😡).

Great #FootIt find!

Photo down the footpath I’d never tried before last weekend, leading into the woods with big open fields to the left.

A distant lake swarming with Mallards plus the odd Coot, Moorhen and Cormorant - very interesting discovery on a patch with minimal open water.

Fairly late to #FootIt so only got to 45 species, but found plenty of intriguing habitat to check out in my local area (just east of Leeds).
Best find by far was only my second-ever Marsh Tit for West Yorkshire.

Final January total for birds seen on foot from home stands at 69, Buzzard finally showed up yesterday (three at once). Strong start to the month was followed by endless rain and the fact my workplace is not realistically close enough to walk to! #footit @footit.bsky.social

A steady 12miler to end the #FootIt month, milder with some 🌞

Finally added our local Spotshank in its roost area, swimming just after the tide had turned opposite @wwtworldwide.bsky.social Washington

Swung by a local country park for an unringed but nowadays presumably feral Barnacle Goose

#FootIt is a great example of keeping it #local, exploring what we have close to home and keeping our carbon footprints low.

As a birder & runner, I’m all for #LowCarbonBirding and promoting the @thegreenrunners.bsky.social #HowWeMove pillar.

#FootIt 2026 is over. Thanks to the @footit.bsky.social crew for the inspiration & motivation.

Challenge was to see or hear as many species of birds in January, all on foot from home (Topsham, Devon).

I walked & ran 390km, taking 425,000 steps around the Exe Estuary.

Total number of species = 107

2/2 On the run home I found a Chaffinch flock at a farm. Stopped to look for Brambling. Nope.

A Redwing flock didn’t reveal a Fieldfare.

Back home my last throw of the dice was Barn Owl. None seen this year on the marshes & today was no different.

35,000 steps today.

My #FootIt remained on 107.

1/2 And that’s it. January’s #FootIt challenge is over.

A final big effort.

Started off with a final try for Gos. Too early in the season.

Ran to Woodbury Common for heathland specialities but only found a paltry 11 species, none new for #FootIt. Darties & Crossbills having none of it.

80 species & 93pts so far for #PWC2026 at Titchfield Haven (& seafront) & 81 species for #FootIt - the difference being Black Redstart. Highlight were the White-fronted Geese!

A month of mainly work / studying & 'house admin' but plenty more time for birding this year 🙂

Cycled up to Braes of Doune windfarm this morning. Struck gold with a SNOW BUNTING up there. Meadow pipit was also new for the year bringing self-powered yearlist to 89. #birdingbybike

Nothing new for #footit so I have finished on 80.
