Cutting in Moscow, when the air reeked of cordite and smoke, each syllable honed to a blade, slicing clean through the silence between them. Sharp with anger on the jagged ridges of a mountain range, flung into the wind with the same precision as his strikes, bruising as any fist, or leg, or headbut. Once, after the crack of a gun, Minhkhoa had stumbled—impact staggering him too close—and when their eyes met the refrain shifted: ah, this you fear too. Then it melted into the curve of a smirk, and they were crashing together, lips and hands, Khoa pressing down on him, gaze fiery, unblinking: you let this rule you as well. But never was it softer—never closer—than in the snow. In the decades since, Bruce has found it easier to root the memory in sensations first. The shocking bite of cold seeping past his collar, creeping along his neck. Ice water trickling through the gap between glove and sleeve. Then the contrasting heat: Khoa blazing across his chest, knees grinding into his ribs, pressing him deeper, deeper still into the drift. His lungs burned, stuttered shallow, each breath a thin mist dissolving into the flush of Khoa’s hands—and the gun he still held, blood dripping down the side of his face. And with that picture came the fear in its clearest form, raw and inescapable: that he would die here. That his parents’ deaths would go unanswered. That he had failed them before he had even begun. That he was helpless to stop what was coming. Then Khoa leaned down until his face was all Bruce could see, the world narrowed to the weight on his chest and the steady, unblinking eyes above him.
