From slogan to system: a sensing‑enabled view of soil health – Soil & Landscape Science Lab

A new paper in the journal SOIL treats soil health as a soil‑system property and puts sensing at the centre of how we measure it: soil.copernicus.org/articles/12/...

On soil health and the pivotal role of sensing Abstract. Soil underpins the functioning of all terrestrial ecosystems and human societies, yet its accelerating degradation demands urgent action. Sustainable soil management is essential to prevent ...

Soil health is everywhere, from national strategies to ‘healthy soils by 2030’, but we still lack a clear, operational way to define and measure it beyond agriculture.

Two kilos of soil with a Rs 68 lakh return: The Maharashtra village that struck biodiversity gold Residents of Dapur village in Maharashtra were both puzzled and excited when nearly Rs 68 lakh appeared in their Gram Panchayat bank account in November 2025. The surprise was understandable. The village had not applied for any government grant or development scheme. Yet a substantial sum had been transferred to its account. For weeks, villagers struggled to understand where the money had come from. Eventually, officials from the state biodiversity board and the forest department called a public meeting to explain. The funds, they said, had arrived through India’s Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) mechanism — a legal framework under the provisions of the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) that requires companies to share profits derived from biological resources with the communities from which they originate. The payment was linked to something seemingly ordinary: two kilogrammes of soil collected from the village. How soil led to profits Dapur lies about 50 kilometres from Nashik and has a population of roughly 5,900 according to the 2011 census, though local estimates suggest it has now grown to more than 8,000. Most residents depend on agriculture, cultivating kharif crops such as soybean and maize, along with vegetables including onions, tomatoes and beans. In 2024,...

#Soil is a bacterial digestive byproduct. Oxygen is a bacterial waste product (via chloroplasts). #bacteria are the only primary primary producers on Earth. Plant & animal cells have evolved around #bacteria to serve them. Seeds carry all the bacteria in- & outside that fix #nitrogen & produce soil.

Importance of Managing Agricultural Soils: Key to the Future of 95% of Food The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has highlighted the critical importance of properly managing agricultural soils to ensure the future of the countryside and maintain the productivity of farms in Spain. During the IV Iberian Congress of Rural Estates, Planas emphasized that agricultural lands should be considered a “living asset” that requires management based on science, technology, and sustainability. Planas underlined the vital role of rural soil, as 95% of food depends on soil quality and fertility. Therefore, it is essential to protect this resource against factors such as degradation and improper use. He also highlighted the soil’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide, which has attracted the interest of both agri-food professionals and investors. The minister warned about the underutilization of land, which poses a risk for forest fires and the proliferation of pests. Agricultural Soils At the event, Planas highlighted that up to 41% of rural soil faces degradation issues and stressed the importance of recovering abandoned lands. He expressed confidence in the Spanish agricultural sector, describing it as a global power, and reaffirmed the need to adopt responsible measures to move forward. Planas recalled President Pedro Sánchez‘s announcement about the platform Tierra Joven, which seeks...
