Artists Behind ‘Maul: Shadow Lord’ Discuss Updated Animation and the Series’ Physically-Painted Touch With just 23 days until the premiere of _Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord_ on April 6, Animation Magazine took the time to interview the creatives behind the show and discuss the new and old techniques being used as Lucasfilm Animation continues to push the envelope. Supervising Director of _Maul: Shadow Lord,_ and _The Bad Batch,_ Brad Rau, said that new Lucasfilm CEO and animation legend Dave Filoni set the bar for Maul’s next chapter high. > “The thing that Dave put to us is, how do we tell this portion of this guy’s story? What is he doing when the Empire rises? What is he doing, trying to get revenge? He only has, like, two lines in _Phantom Menace_ , so he’s just always been this mysterious, interesting character that we felt like the time was right to tell his story… We keep a measure of mystery around him. It’s an interesting narrative balance. How do we focus on facets of this character without ruining him by telling you too much?” Animation Supervisor Keith Kellogg, another Lucasfilm veteran, points out that the new characters Maul has to interact with in _Shadow Lord_ are the foils he needs at this point in his journey. That includes disillusioned Jedi Apprentice Devon Izara, and a local cop, Brander Lawson, who’s tired of being a lawman, and apparently struggling with a strained relationship with his son. “We’ve kind of never done a full-on, for lack of a better word, cops-and-robbers kind of _Star Wars._ ” That story is currently being fleshed out in the Dark Horse series,_Shadow of Maul._ Cover of Issue 1 of ‘Shadow of Maul’ From an animation standpoint, everyone who saw the trailer noticed that the animation style has changed somewhat since _The Bad Batch._ Cinematography and Effects lead Joel Aron made it clear that Filoni asked for updated character rigs, textures, and more enhancements to make the show more cinematic, while still leaning into what makes animation special: > “At no point do I ever want the show to look like we’re crossing the line into live action. That’s something that Dave has always made sure that we don’t do, and so I think because of that, we have a very, very tight relationship with the artists that are producing the show.” For _Shadow Lord,_ animators developed a new power rig, allowing them to create naturalistic animation distortion frame-by-frame, which Rau points out in the trailer: > “There’s a couple of shots of Maul spinning and whirling, and if you look frame by frame, you’ll see distorted fingers, and the overlap is a little bit more like 2D features.” A scene still from Lucasfilm’s STAR WARS: MAUL – SHADOW LORD, exclusively on Disney+. Photo courtesy of Lucasfilm Ltd. © 2026 Lucasfilm Ltd. All Rights Reserved. That updated rigging also translates to updated facial expressions, allowing for more subtle performances. It’s truly light-years beyond where _The Clone Wars_ started so many years ago. Additionally, Kellogg states that the fight scenes are getting a bit of an anime-inspired stylistic boost to lean into the strengths of animation as a medium. > “For the action scenes and things, we really wanted to try and concentrate on silhouettes of the character. So we enabled the rig … to really shape that silhouette a bit more, so that we could really get a very artistic, slightly anime kind of style. We really wanted the show to reflect the aggressive style of [Maul]. The other thing we did was really try and focus on crisp posing … especially for fight and action scenes. We really wanted to make those really strong clashing moments with lightsabers and things really … read in a very strong, graphic kind of way.” Those updated animation sequences were created with new software aimed at a cinematic level of quality. The creators are now shooting scenes more akin to live-action scenes with reference footage shot of actor Sam Witwer, which the _Animation Magazine_ article goes into some detail about. But the new technology has also been supported with some old-fashioned style. After making small appearances in _Skeleton Crew_ and _Andor_ Season 2, matte paintings are returning to animation. Rau explained how “matte paintings have helped us extend sets to get a bigger scope and scale, especially for our huge city, and you can see the painterly style in the background.” This artistic touch is further complemented by the show’s use of glass-painted brushstrokes to create the hand-touched look and surreal atmosphere we see in the trailer, something StarWars.com revealed when the trailer dropped. Generations Are Different, the Force Is The Same: 50 Years Of Star Wars First released in 1977, Star Wars seems to be still a part of our heads, a permanent browser page we never closed. Almost half a century later, the hairstyles have not bounced back, but the movement remains. So why does it endure? Not why, but why are people still fond of it, but why does it continue to multiply itself within culture? Between generations, platforms and politics, memes, toys, and a streaming ecosystem which was nonexistent when Luke was moaning about power converters. Let’s break it down. The myth, math, and a little brain chemistry. ### #1 The original movie is not only famous. It is institutionally everlasting. A lot of movies are beloved. Fewer are canonized. In 1989, the 1977 Star Wars movie entered the Library of Congress National Film Registry.. That’s not a fan award; it’s the cultural equivalent of being placed in a climate-controlled vault with “DO NOT TOUCH, THIS IS HISTORY” written on the door, and a button to ‘Learn More’. It is also at number 13 on the American film institute’s 100 greatest American films (10th anniversary edition). You don’t get that high on AFI lists by “having a fun laser sword moment.” You get there by rewiring how movies are made and remembered. ### #2 It hits the brain with myth-engine precision George Lucas did not simply write a space adventure. He created a myth-like form of a story, with common archetypes: the farm boy, his teacher, the villain, the love interest, the castle, the challenge. That structure is powerful because it’s legible in one viewing. Even for kids. While still feeling bigger than yourself. Read about Carl Jung’s archetypes, if you don’t believe me. That matters for longevity. When it is easy to enter it is easy to pass down. The movie does not require parent explanation of the whole lore bible to their children before it takes effect. Emotional grammar is intuitive. Also, the central concept, the Force, is a narrative cheat code in the best way. It’s spirituality without homework. It’s destiny without a sermon. It’s “trust yourself” packaged as glowing space mysticism. And since it is flexible, it allows writers to continue redefining it by the age without cracking the backbone. ### #3 The music is essentially a cognitive virus (complimentary) When you wish to have a lasting franchise, then you should not simply create characters. Make audio triggers. The music of Star Wars written by John Williams, does not just follow scenes; it marks emotion. The themes are the shortcuts to the wonder, danger, romance, awe- internal remote control of emotions. The Recording Academy itself mentions how central this music has been to the history of Williams’ awards, various nominations and wins related to Star Wars-related work. The effect is simple: people don’t only remember plot points. They recall what it was like, and Williams brought such feelings with him. Play the theme at a concert, and people will be ready to see a crawl of yellow text and think that life is starting to get serious. That’s not nostalgia; that’s neural branding. ### #4 It was a technical revolution disguised as a popcorn movie Star Wars didn’t just change storytelling. It transformed the equipment of contemporary blockbuster films. Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) was established in 1975, which was developed due to the fact that Lucas required visual effects which were yet to be produced. The general creation myth behind that is: We could not find the technology, so we create a company and make up one. This is important to its survivability since Star Wars has been identified with innovation in spectacle. Each new generation demands that the galaxy should appear on the latest screen, and the DNA of this brand contains that space race. Even those who do not adore all the new installments still attend since Star Wars comes with promise: you may witness something that you have never witnessed. ### #5 Numbers are absurd, and absurd numbers create gravity The cultural power is not only emotional, but it is also financial. Star Wars lives in part due to its reputation as one of the most successful cash cows in the entertainment business in that it keeps on being reborn, elaborated, rethought, and redone by newer generations. A few anchoring facts: * Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm was $4.05 billion (cash + stock), according to the deal filing. * The original “Star Wars” (1977) remains a monster: #1 domestic box office (inflation-adjusted) on The Numbers, with $1.858B inflation-adjusted domestic gross listed in its records. * The film franchise overall has cleared $10B+ worldwide in live-action box office (unadjusted), per Entertainment Weekly’s breakdown using Box Office Mojo numbers. And that’s just films. When analysts add up total franchise revenue (box office + merch + games + etc.), estimates are in the tens of billions- Visual Capitalist, to take one example, has Star Wars at about 70B in all time revenue estimates. Treat that as an estimate, but it’s useful for scale. Large income brings about large continuity: additional projects, additional marketing, additional portals. The galaxy stays in circulation. ### #6 It’s built for generational handoff Certain fandoms are intensive yet limited. Star wars is dramatic and intergenerational. Children can adore it because of robots, creatures and adventure. The adolescents may adore it due to the identity, rebellion, and chosen family. Adults can love it because of politics, tragedy, stories about war, and the I-once-thought-I-could-make-a-broken-institution-right energy. That is the trick: Star Wars is growing up with you. It means different things at 10, 20, 40. Such conventions as Star Wars Celebration are their own cultural holiday. Celebration Japan 2025 was even referred to by Disney as its largest international Star Wars Celebration. Rituals are what keep stories alive after novelty fades. ### #7 Streaming turned the galaxy into a weekly habit In the old model, Star Wars was an “event.” Now it can be a “routine.” Nielsen streaming data shows how these shows become measurable attention magnets. For example, Variety reported “The Mandalorian” crossing 1.1 billion minutes viewed in a Nielsen weekly window tied to Season 3’s release period. StarWarsNewsNet itself has reported Nielsen-minute totals for Mandalorian weeks as well, framing the franchise in “modern attention metrics.” Those minutes matter because they represent repeat exposure—and repeat exposure is how pop culture becomes background reality. Star Wars isn’t only something you watch. It becomes something that’s around. The real answer: Star Wars is a language, not just a story Star Wars endures because it’s not one thing. It’s: * a myth structure people instinctively understand * a soundscape that rewires memory * a technical legacy that pushed the medium forward * an economic engine that never stops funding new entry points * a ritual ecosystem (films, series, conventions, merch, games) * and a shared vocabulary: the Force, the Jedi, the Dark Side, the crawl, the mask, the breathing, the hum of a lightsaber It’s powerful because it doesn’t just sit in a museum of old movies (even though, yes, the Library of Congress basically gave it a velvet rope). It lives where culture lives: in repetition, in reinvention, and in the simple fact that every new generation eventually discovers the same truth: Space is big, life is messy, mentors vanish at inconvenient times… and somehow the farm kid still finds a way to matter. That’s not just a franchise. That’s a modern myth with a very aggressive marketing department, and honestly, both are doing excellent work. ##### Guest Post + posts * Guest Post #molongui-disabled-link __ From a Galaxy Far, Far Away to Your Pocket: How Mobile Gaming Is Taking Over the Entertainment Universe * Guest Post #molongui-disabled-link __ The Force of Chance: How Star Wars' Sabacc Inspired a New Generation of Online Casino Players * Guest Post #molongui-disabled-link __ The Shadow of the Empire: How George Lucas Created Modern Mythology * Guest Post #molongui-disabled-link __ Light vs. Darkness: The Off-Screen Story of Star Wars
