Wayne Thiebaud exhibition The Courtauld more interesting than I first thought with quirky still life representations of iconic American images #american #stilllife #waynethiebaud #paintings

Thiebaud of course painted other things than food, but his canvases filled with cakes and pies and ice cream cones and more are simply delectable. “Pie Counter” is a still life painting but it uses repetition to create a mouth-watering pattern that is a veritable feast for the eyes. Thiebaud used the physical properties of paint to mimic the look and feel of cake and frosting and pie filling and whipped cream. This painting is a commentary on mass production, of indulgence, of geometric form, of the beauty to be found in everyday items. And it brings thoughts of the rituals related to eating to every viewer’s mind. Delicious!

December's theme: Pop Art
WAYNE THIEBAUD (1920 – 2021), “Pie Counter”, 1963. Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City US.
Methinks that the American artist Wayne Thiebaud really enjoyed food!
