In honor of National Special Education Day together with the 50th anniversary of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), we want to help shed some light on how to support your Dually-Identified English Learners—students who need both language acquisition support AND specialized intervention for a learning disability.
Here are 4 strategies that go beyond the typical scaffolds you already provide for English learners:
1. IEP = Instructional Gold. You have access to it. Plus, you’re legally obligated to use it, so dig deep and look beyond the accommodations list to find individual processing strengths to support truly individualized differentiated instruction. A strong auditory learner? Pair written texts with audio recordings, even in L1 when possible.
2. Figure out the "why" behind the struggle. Ask yourself and observe: Is the source of the challenge happening at decoding, vocabulary, or comprehension? Language acquisition barriers and learning disabilities often look similar on the surface, but may have different “roots”. Once you’ve identified the root issue, you can scaffold with the appropriate interventions.
3. Double your wait time, then add more. Dually-identified students are processing language AND managing disability-related challenges simultaneously. What may feel like an eternity of silence is their brain doing heavy cognitive lifting. Protect that space.
4. Use L1 strategically to isolate challenges. If a student can demonstrate understanding in their home language, you've just gathered valuable diagnostic information. It helps clarify where the support is most needed.
For students with more significant disabilities, lean into your IEP team—you shouldn't be navigating that alone. Request a collaboration meeting if one hasn't happened.
