Frog yoke 600-900 CE
Greenstone, pigment (probably hematite)
The Michael C. Rockefeller Memorial Collection, Gift of Nelson A. Rockefeller, 1963 (1978.412.15)
Recorded provenance: Stendahl Art Galleries, Los Angeles, until 1956; Nelson A. Rockefeller, New York, on permanent loan to the MPA, 1956-63; the MPA, New York, 1963-78
Yokes are named for their formal similarity to those used to harness draft animals.
When placed vertically, they resemble cave openings, believed to be portals into the underworld. This work, with the bulging eyes and elongated mouth of a crouching amphibian, evokes the earth deity who resides at such an entryway. The supernatural imagery is appropriate for a sculpture associated with the Mesoamerican ballgame, given that the game could end in ritual sacrifice.”

Necklace with frog-shaped beads
1400-1521 CE
Gold
Gift of Jan Mitchell and Sons, in memory of Ellin Mitchell,
1998(1998.39.1-20)
Recorded provenance: Stendahl Gallery, Los Angeles;
Jan Mitchell, New York, by 1968-98
Elegant gold necklaces comprising beads cast in the shape of animals, or animal parts, were produced using the lost-wax technique. Each bead was created from a wax-and-clay mold that was then filled with molten metal. After cooling, the mold was broken open to release the finished piece.
Gold ornaments were generally worn only by the nobility, and their subject matter-from the powerful molars of a jaguar to a fertile abundance of frogs-speaks to concepts of royal, political, and military power.”

Gift of Conny and Fred Landmann, 1992 (1992.60.8)
Recorded provenance: Conny and Frederick E. Landmann, New Hampshire, by 1992
Moche artists were close observers of the natural world, and their early ceramics often depicted animals with considerable fidelity.
Made before molds were commonly used, these effigies demonstrate an expansion of the sculptural possibilities of clay vessels.
Some vessels captured salient features of animals two-dimensionally; in later centuries, slip painting would become the favored means to convey ideas.”

“Gold finger-ring; hoop of twisted wire intertwined with beaded wire and terminating on each side in two serpents' heads, which emerge from under a rosette at either end; the bezel is in the form of a frog lying at full length, with head half-hidden beneath one of the rosettes.”

“Gold ring with a frog between snake-heads. The hoop consists of three plain twisted wires with beaded wires laid along the channels. There is a corrugated sheet collar at either end, from which emerge two snake-heads. Between each pair of snake-heads is a rosette with spiral-beaded wire borders. The bezel of this unusual ring takes the form of a frog, made from a die-formed gold sheet with a plain back sheet. The frog's back legs grasp the pair of snake-heads behind it.”
