I am really not looking forward to #wildfire season this year.

I know in my area we had a record low snowpack this year. There’s going to be some serious water issues this summer. Not so much in the city, but everywhere outside it.

Hoping for a cool, wet spring this year.

Basically, if people choose to live in the mountains, they probably should be fire prepared. If they’re not going to take those precautions, then it’s probably a good idea to live somewhere with substantially less fire risk. #colorado #wildfire

If the giant sequoia is dying out, why are there tens of thousands of seedlings and saplings? Thousands of giant sequoia seedlings sprouted after a fire swept a grove in the Sierra in 2021. Will they replace the behemoths that died or become extinct?

"The new trees number in the thousands — at least 4,000 per acre or as many as 20,000, depending on who is counting. A few rise above head-height, the most energetic sentinels of regeneration."

Comic strip called "Wavering Wildfires"
Panel 1: Worried person in front of a fire "Whenever I feel like the world is falling around me, I try to think of wildfires."
Panel 2: A wildfire outside a window "Wildfires can be terrible. Seemingly happen out of nowhere and take out so many things with them."
Panel 3: A seed growing out of the ground "but eventually everything grows back fresher and stronger."
Panel 4: Person lying in bed sad "Maybe I just need one of my own "controlled burns"

My younger sister @/marynmphotography on Insta is studying to get a degree in wildlife biology and gave me the idea for this comic. She inspires me a lot!

Debate Over Natural vs. Human-Assisted Recovery of Giant Sequoias After Wildfire In the Redwood Mountain Grove of Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks, tens of thousands of giant sequoia seedlings and saplings have emerged after the devastating 2021 KNP Complex fire. While the mature sequoias in some areas were almost entirely killed, the forest floor is now covered with new growth ranging from knee-high seedlings to chest-high saplings. Scientists and park managers are divided over the future of these young trees. One perspective predicts many will die due to drought, climate change, and past fire suppression, advocating for active human intervention such as planting and thinning. Another viewpoint argues that sequoias have naturally survived high-intensity fires for millennia, and that most seedlings will naturally thin out as a few strong individuals grow into mature giants. This debate highlights the tension between conservation strategies that rely on human management and those that prioritize natural ecological processes. The outcome of the grove's regeneration is uncertain, with questions about how many seedlings are necessary to replace the iconic giants lost in recent fires. The article illustrates the complexity of managing ancient forests in a changing climate and underscores the need for careful consideration of ecological dynamics.

Modeling Storm Clouds Caused by Extreme Wildfires Newswise — Pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb) clouds are powerful storm clouds created by extreme wildfires. They can inject smoke and moisture high into the atmosphere. This can affect air quality, weather, and the Earth system. However, simulating pyroCb clouds is challenging in Earth system models. Researchers developed a first-of-its-kind framework to simulate the effects of pyroCb clouds. The simulation models the clouds’ effects on multiple scales (from 500 meters to globally, and hourly to 12 hour timeframes) in the Department of Energy’s (DOE) flagship Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). The simulation successfully captured key features of pyroCb clouds observed during the 2020 Creek Fire in California. Impact When extreme fires under favorable meteorological conditions drive PyroCb clouds, these clouds can inject as much smoke into the stratosphere as moderate volcanic eruptions. They can potentially alter the atmosphere’s composition as well as how much sunlight the Earth radiates back into space. Because most Earth system models lack detailed interactions between wildfires and the atmosphere, the models struggle to represent these events. This capability for E3SM to simulate wildfires provides a foundation for exploring the regional and global impacts of pyroCb clouds. This capability also supports many other E3SM applications. These applications focus...

How governments can help Indigenous communities disproportionately impacted by wildfires Nearly every summer over the past decade, the story has been the same across many parts of Canada: wildfires rage out of control and skies are filled with smoke. Communities are often forced to evacuate. Wildfires disproportionately impact Indigenous communities. Over the last four decades, 42 per cent of wildfire evacuations across Canada have been of Indigenous communities. Thirteen years ago, there was little understanding of evacuation experiences of First Nations’ communities, despite them being so frequently impacted. That’s when we partnered with seven First Nations in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario, as well as 16 departments and agencies involved in wildfire evacuations, to establish the First Nations Wildfire Evacuation Partnership (FNWEP). Since 2013, the FNWEP has explored the evacuation experiences of First Nation residents, identified factors that affect experiences in positive and negative ways and recommended ways to reduce negative impacts of wildfire evacuations. In 2021, we published our book, First Nations Wildfire Evacuation Experiences: A guide for communities and external agencies. The book is laid out so that each chapter is a stage of a wildfire evacuation, all the way from seeing smoke in the distance to returning to the community after the event is over. We summarized findings...
